This is the benzoyl peroxide wash I recommend for chest and back acne. It releases oxygen inside the pore, bacteria cannot grow resistant to it, and 4% works about as well as 10% with far less burning. It bleaches fabric, so use white towels and bedding.

Okay fitThe bacteria that drive acne live inside a clogged pore, with no oxygen. Benzoyl peroxide breaks down on skin and releases oxygen, which they cannot survive.
They cannot become resistant to it, which is why dermatologists pair it with clindamycin and other antibiotics — it keeps the antibiotic working.
Hormonal Acne
Okay fitDeep, tender breakouts along the jaw and chin usually need a prescription, and benzoyl peroxide is what most prescription routines are built on.
A wash covers the area in seconds, and works on the chest and back as easily as the face.
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation
Okay fitEvery inflamed spot leaves a brown or purple mark, so fewer spots means fewer marks. Never use benzoyl peroxide alongside hydroquinone — the two react and can temporarily stain skin.
Comedonal Acne
Poor fitBenzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria behind inflamed spots. It does little to the plug of dead cells and oil that makes a blackhead, so comedones stay put.
A retinoid such as adapalene is the tool for those, and the two work well together.
Rosacea
Poor fitRosacea papules look like acne, so people reach for a BP wash. Benzoyl peroxide is an irritant and rosacea skin flushes at far less, so a 4% wash usually reddens the cheeks more than it settles them.
A prescription encapsulated form exists for rosacea — ask your doctor.
Dry Skin
Poor fitThis wash is built to strip oil. On skin that is already tight and flaky it makes things worse.
Use a creamy non-foaming cleanser instead.

It is a thick, creamy wash that lathers well and rinses off without a film. It can leave skin tight and dry for the first couple of weeks, most noticeably around the mouth and jaw.
A moisturizer handles it. It bleaches fabric. Use white towels and pillowcases, and rinse your hairline and neck properly. It is fragrance-free.

Benzoyl peroxide attacks the middle step. It breaks down on skin and releases oxygen into the pore, and the bacteria cannot survive it. There is no known route for them to become resistant, which is why it is paired with antibiotics such as clindamycin.
PanOxyl Acne Creamy Wash uses 4% rather than the 10% beside it on the shelf. Studies show 4% is about as effective, with far less dryness. And because it is a wash, contact time is short, which lowers irritation again and makes benzoyl peroxide practical on the chest and back.

Not reliably. This is a treatment wash, not a makeup remover — take water-resistant sunscreen off with a regular cleanser first, then use this.
Careful
Not in the same routine as hydroquinone. Follow with moisturizer, especially in the first few weeks.

What to expect
Less new inflammation within two to four weeks, and a clear difference by eight to twelve. Dryness comes first, then settles. It does nothing for marks already left behind.

A stronger 5% benzoyl peroxide, seven ingredients, nothing to offset the dryness. Its Drug Facts panel says not for very sensitive skin.
La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser
Salicylic acid 2% instead, so no fabric bleaching. But salicylic acid in a wash has weaker evidence, and the menthol stings inflamed skin.
