Differin Daily Deep Facial Cleanser: Dermatologist Review

Differin Daily Deep Facial Cleanser is an over-the-counter acne wash built on benzoyl peroxide 5%, sold at drugstores for about $11 to $14. The Drug Facts panel makes it a medicine, not a plain face wash. It is also not adapalene — that is Differin's famous gel, and there is none in this bottle.

The list runs to seven items: the benzoyl peroxide, one foaming surfactant, glycerin, a thickener and the basics. Fragrance free, which is the upside of a list that short. Nothing in it offsets the dryness the active causes.

A clear gel that foams on wet skin and rinses off cleanly. Fragrance free, no grit.

Skin feels stripped afterward, so a moisturizer every time is not optional. Expect real dryness and some peeling in the first weeks.

Benzoyl peroxide bleaches fabric on contact. Towels, pillowcases and clothing all lose their color, so keep white ones near the sink.

Balm

A solid that melts into an oil in the warmth of your hands.

Melts sunscreen and makeup and will not drip, which makes it easy to travel with. It needs a real rinse, with a cloth or a second wash, or it stays on the skin.

Acne starts when a pore clogs with oil and dead cells. Cutibacterium acnes, which lives on everyone's skin, feeds in that airless space, and the immune reaction to it is the red, sore part of a spot. Benzoyl peroxide releases oxygen inside the pore, and this bacterium cannot survive oxygen. That is why bacteria never build resistance to it, and why dermatologists still reach for it first.

This wash delivers it at 5%, near the top of what is sold without a prescription. Higher is not better. Many people do just as well on 4% or lower with less dryness, and the strength you can use every day beats the strongest one on the shelf.

The whole formula is seven ingredients. Very little to react to, and nothing protecting your barrier while a drying active works. The moisturizer afterward does the job the formula leaves out.

This is how many ingredients are on the label. The more a product contains, the more chances one of them bothers you. That matters most if you have sensitive skin, eczema, or a known allergy. If your skin tolerates most things, a long list is not a problem by itself.

Not for very sensitive skin: Differin's own Drug Facts panel says: "Do not use if you have very sensitive skin." That is the manufacturer telling you who this is not for.

Nothing in it protects your barrier: seven ingredients — the BPO, a surfactant and the basics. CeraVe's 4% version includes ceramides and niacinamide specifically to offset the irritation. This has neither, and 5% is the stronger dose.

It will dry and peel skin: expect real dryness and peeling. Start every other day.

It bleaches towels and clothes: towels, pillowcases, clothing.

This is not the adapalene gel: Differin's famous product is the adapalene gel, a retinoid. There is no adapalene in this cleanser. Same brand, different active — an easy mistake to make.

The benzene question, in plain terms: here is the accurate version.

What the 2024 testing found: in 2024, an independent lab reported that benzoyl peroxide can break down into benzene, a known carcinogen, and that heat speeds this up. A later independent study found measurable benzene in a third of products at room temperature.

What the FDA testing found: the FDA tested 95 products. More than 90% had undetectable or extremely low benzene. Six were recalled. This one was not.

The FDA calls the risk very low: "Even with daily use of these products for decades, the risk of a person developing cancer because of exposure to benzene found in these products is very low." Studies since have found no link between benzoyl peroxide use and benzene-related cancers.

How to store it safely: per the American Academy of Dermatology, store it at room temperature or cooler, keep it out of hot cars and steamy bathrooms, and replace it every 10–12 weeks.

Differin Daily Deep Facial Cleanser costs $3.50 per ounce. That is the highest of the 17 cleansers priced on Dermapedia, which run from $0.59 to $3.50 per ounce.

A benzoyl peroxide wash often goes on chest and back as well as face, so it goes faster. Since it rinses away, the bigger bottle is usually the better buy.

Options if 5% is too harsh, or if you want barrier support. With benzoyl peroxide, the strength you can tolerate daily beats the strongest one on the shelf.

PanOxyl Acne Creamy Wash

Benzoyl peroxide 4% works about as well as 10% with far less dryness, and the creamy base is easier to keep using. Both bleach fabric.

Salicylic acid 2% instead, so no fabric bleaching. But it has weaker evidence than benzoyl peroxide, and the menthol stings sore skin.
