La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser is a creamy, low-foam face wash for dry and sensitive skin, in a large pump bottle for about $15 to $20. It is a wash, not a treatment: nothing in it stays on the skin long enough to clear acne, fade dark spots or rebuild a barrier.

Coco-betaine, a mild surfactant, does the cleaning. Ceramide NP and niacinamide ride along, and glycerin, a humectant that pulls water toward skin, sits second on the list. That is why it barely foams and why skin does not feel tight afterward.

Every cleanser works the same way. Surfactants have an oil-loving end and a water-loving end, so they surround the oil, dirt and sunscreen and the bundle rinses away instead of clinging. A surfactant cannot tell your own fats from the day's grime, and a strong one takes both — the tight, squeaky feeling afterward is the outer layer losing some of the glue that holds it together.

This uses coco-betaine, one of the milder surfactants, and not much of it, so less is lifted off and less has to be replaced. Ceramides and niacinamide are in the bottle too, and both have good evidence when left on skin — but this rinses off in under a minute, so treat them as a bonus. The barrier repair comes from your moisturizer.
