Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30 is what I suggest when chemical filters sting. Zinc oxide is the only active, and five ceramides moisturize while it protects. At 19.5% zinc it leaves a white cast on medium and deep skin, and no tint corrects it. Water resistance is 40 minutes — not for swimming.

Good fitChemical sun filters have to sink into the top layer of skin to work, and they are the usual suspect when a sunscreen stings or flushes you.
There are none here — zinc oxide is the only active, and no fragrance.
Dry Skin

The white cast is the real story. 19.5% zinc oxide is a lot of white mineral with no tint to cancel it, so it shows on medium and deep skin tones and will not fully rub away. Once set, the finish is close to matte. Some find it pills under makeup, usually a sign of layering too soon. Fragrance-free, in a pump, so the dose is easy to judge.

At 19.5% the zinc load is high for a face sunscreen. That buys broad cover across UVB, which burns, and UVA, which reaches deeper and drives most of the mottling and sagging people call sun damage. It also buys the white cast.
The second half is the moisturizer. Five ceramides go back into the outer layer, with squalane and glycerin. The same step blocks and refills, which is the argument for this over a plain sunscreen at the same price.

Cetearyl Alcohol
A fatty alcohol that softens skin and thickens the product. Despite the name, it is not drying.
Ceramide EOP
A long-chain ceramide that helps the barrier fats stack into tight, orderly layers.
Ceramide NP
One of the main fats between skin cells in the outer layer. It helps refill gaps in the barrier.
Ceramide AP
A second skin ceramide. It works with the others to rebuild the barrier.
Dimethicone
A silicone that smooths the surface and adds to the protective film.

How much
About a quarter teaspoon for the face. The SPF 30 on the label is measured at that thickness, and most people apply half.
Where
Face, ears, the sides of the neck, and the hairline.
Reapply
Every two hours outdoors, and straight after swimming or heavy sweating. Water resistance is 40 minutes, so top up more often on wet days.
What to expect
It works from the first morning. The white cast does not fade with wear or time — if it bothers you on day one, it will bother you on day thirty.
