The most effective acne treatment you can buy without a prescription. It clears blackheads and whiteheads as well as pimples. Start twice a week with a pea-sized amount; skin looks worse for 4 to 12 weeks. Judge it at 12 weeks, not before. If your skin is dry and irritated, start with a gentler retinol.

Inflammatory Acne
Okay fitEvery pimple starts the same way. The pore lining sheds dead cells faster than it clears them, the plug traps oil, and bacteria multiply behind it.
Adapalene works on that first step, so Differin Gel prevents the spot that would appear in three weeks rather than treating today's.
Comedonal Acne
Okay fitBlackheads and whiteheads are pores plugged with dead cells and oil, before any inflammation. Unclogging is adapalene's main action, so this is what it does best.
Nothing else on a drugstore shelf clears them as reliably.
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation
Okay fitThe brown marks left after spots heal are pigment dropped into the skin by inflammation.
Differin Gel helps twice: it speeds the turnover that carries pigment out, and it stops the next crop that would leave new marks. Sunscreen matters more than the retinoid here; sun darkens the marks you already have.

Once dry it sits under sunscreen and makeup without pilling, though night is where it belongs. A pea-sized amount does cover a whole face, and more does not work faster. The flaking in the first few weeks is the retinoid, not the gel. It clusters around the nose, the corners of the mouth and the chin, and looks worse than it is.

Adapalene works before it. Retinoids bind receptors inside the skin cell and change how quickly it matures and lets go, so the pore stops clogging. That is why Differin Gel clears blackheads and whiteheads as well as inflamed spots.
Adapalene is also the most stable and least irritating of the true retinoids, which is why this is the one sold without a prescription. The turnover that clears a pore also softens fine lines over time, a second effect in the tube.

Careful
Build up over months, not weeks. Going nightly from day one is how most people decide they cannot tolerate retinoids. Retinoids make skin burn faster, so sunscreen every morning is part of the treatment. Keep it off the eyelids.
Tip
If it is too drying, buffer it. Moisturizer first, then Differin Gel, then moisturizer again.
What to expect
Skin looks worse before better. A purge of four to twelve weeks is normal as clogs surface. Judge it at twelve weeks. Most people quit around week six, which is exactly the wrong moment.
