Top things to know about La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser
- La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser is a foaming wash with salicylic acid 2 percent, about $15 to $20. As a regulated over-the-counter acne drug, it prints the dose on a Drug Facts panel rather than hiding it in a blend. It supports an acne routine; it will not clear acne alone.
- The base is a sulfate detergent, sodium laureth sulfate, softened with coco-betaine and decyl glucoside. Glycerin holds back water, zinc gluconate handles oil, capryloyl salicylic acid is a second oil-loving acid. The menthol makes the cool tingle. It does nothing for acne.
It states salicylic acid 2% on a Drug Facts panel, more than most acne washes will tell you. But a wash rinses away, and salicylic acid cannot stay in the pore the way benzoyl peroxide does. The menthol stings and treats nothing. A leave-on salicylic acid does more.

Skin fit
Is it right for your skin?
Oily Skin
Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, not water, so it mixes into sebum instead of sliding off. It cuts surface oil and rinses clean without a tight film.
Comedonal Acne
Blackheads and closed bumps are plugs of dead cells and oil inside the pore, and salicylic acid loosens the bonds between them. A wash gets 30 to 60 seconds of contact, so treat it as help at the edges and keep your real acid in a leave-on.
Inflammatory Acne
A stated 2 percent dose in a regulated drug tells you what you are getting, but it will not replace benzoyl peroxide or a retinoid, and the menthol makes it a poor partner for sore skin.
Texture
What it feels like on skin.
Wash
A clear gel that foams quickly and rinses off completely. Skin feels clean and slightly bare afterward, which is the sulfate base doing its work. It tingles. That is the menthol, not the salicylic acid, and on inflamed or peeling skin the tingle tips into stinging. It is fragrance-free. It takes off makeup and light sunscreen but not water-resistant sunscreen, so those days need an oil cleanser first.
Alternatives
If this isn’t the right product for you
PanOxyl Acne Creamy Wash
Benzoyl peroxide 4% stays in the follicle after rinsing; salicylic acid in a wash does not. No menthol. It bleaches fabric.
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Cleanser
Sulfate-free, fragrance-free foam for oily skin, no menthol. No active at all, so it treats no acne.
Differin Daily Deep Facial Cleanser
A stronger 5% benzoyl peroxide wash, seven ingredients, nothing to offset dryness. A more proven active, but the label warns off very sensitive skin.

A small humectant. It moves into the outer layer of skin and holds water there.

How to use it.
What to pair it with
- LayeringFollow with moisturizer while skin is damp. It leaves water-resistant sunscreen behind, so use an oil cleanser or balm first.
- Watch outThe menthol stings inflamed or peeling skin. Burning is not the acid working — pick a menthol-free wash.
What to expect
- What to expectLess surface oil from the first wash. Breakouts take six to eight weeks to move, and a cleanser is a small part of that. If nothing has changed by then, what you leave on needs changing.
