CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser: Dermatologist Review

CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser is a fragrance-free face wash in a tube, about $14 to $17. It is a treatment, not a plain cleanser. Benzoyl peroxide at 4 percent makes it an over-the-counter acne drug, with a Drug Facts panel on the box.

Benzoyl peroxide releases oxygen inside the pore and kills the bacterium behind inflammatory acne. Around it CeraVe puts three ceramides, cholesterol and niacinamide. That is unusual in an acne wash, and it is the point — benzoyl peroxide is drying, and this one carries the repair materials with it.

A white cream that foams as soon as it meets water. It rinses clean and leaves no film.

It is fragrance-free, and it leaves skin tight if you use it twice a day from the start. That tightness is the benzoyl peroxide, not the foaming agents.

It bleaches fabric — towels, pillowcases, dark shirts. Not a maybe. Use white towels and a white pillowcase.

Balm

A solid that melts into an oil in the warmth of your hands.

Melts sunscreen and makeup and will not drip, which makes it easy to travel with. It needs a real rinse, with a cloth or a second wash, or it stays on the skin.

Benzoyl peroxide breaks down on skin into benzoic acid and oxygen. Cutibacterium acnes, the bacterium multiplying inside a blocked pore, lives without oxygen and cannot survive being flooded with it. Bacteria evolve around antibiotics; they cannot evolve around being oxidized, which is why benzoyl peroxide does not breed resistance.

The surprising part is that a wash works at all. Benzoyl peroxide is substantive — it stays in the pore after you rinse. In testing, a 6 percent wash used for a 20-second contact time once a day cut acne bacteria more than a hundredfold, including antibiotic-resistant strains. The 1.25 and 2.5 percent washes needed fifteen minutes of contact to do anything. At 4 percent, this clears the bar.

On benzene, the short version. The FDA tested 95 benzoyl peroxide products, found more than 90 percent had undetectable or extremely low levels, recalled six, and called the cancer risk very low even with daily use for decades. Store it cool and replace it every few months.

This is how many ingredients are on the label. The more a product contains, the more chances one of them bothers you. That matters most if you have sensitive skin, eczema, or a known allergy. If your skin tolerates most things, a long list is not a problem by itself.

Weak acne washes rinse off too fast: concentration matters enormously in a wash. The 1.25% to 2.5% washes needed more than fifteen minutes of contact time to do anything in testing. Nobody washes their face for fifteen minutes.

The strength here is high enough: at 4%, this clears the bar. Be skeptical of any low-strength acne wash.

It ruins colored towels and shirts: it bleaches fabric — towels, pillowcases, dark shirts. Not a maybe. Use white towels.

May dry and irritate the skin: it is drying and irritating, particularly at first.

The benzene question, in plain terms: the accurate version, in short.

Heat can break it down into benzene: in 2024, an independent lab reported that benzoyl peroxide can break down into benzene, a known carcinogen, and that heat speeds it up. A later study found measurable benzene in a third of products at room temperature.

The FDA found very little benzene: the FDA tested 95 products. More than 90% had undetectable or extremely low benzene. Six were recalled; this was not one.

The FDA calls the risk very low: in the FDA's words, "Even with daily use of these products for decades, the risk of a person developing cancer because of exposure to benzene found in these products is very low." No study since has linked benzoyl peroxide to benzene-related cancers.

Store it cool and replace it often: per the American Academy of Dermatology, store it at room temperature or cooler, out of a hot car and a steamy bathroom, and replace it every 10–12 weeks.

CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser costs $3.00 per ounce. That is cheaper than 1 of the other 16 cleansers priced on Dermapedia, which run from $0.59 to $3.50 per ounce.

The benzoyl peroxide goes down the drain with the rest, so you use a lot per bottle. Volume matters more than the price of a single ounce.

These are the options if benzoyl peroxide is too drying, or the fabric bleaching is a dealbreaker.
