Skin can be confusing. There are thousands of skincare products, ingredients, treatments, lasers, peels, and procedures — and a lot of conflicting advice about what actually works.
Dermapedia is an independent skin encyclopedia written and reviewed by Dr. Margaret Schwarz, a board-certified, Harvard-affiliated dermatologist practicing in Boston. It explains common skin conditions, skincare ingredients, medications, lasers, cosmetic procedures, and other dermatologic treatments in straightforward language.
The goal isn't to sell you anything. It's to help you understand your skin well enough to make better decisions about it.
About the author

Dermapedia is written and reviewed by Dr. Margaret Schwarz, a board-certified, Harvard-affiliated dermatologist practicing in Boston.
She completed her dermatology residency at Boston University in 2020 and is on staff at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, a Harvard Medical School teaching affiliate.
She sees these conditions in clinic every week — the acne that isn't responding, the rash nobody has named, the patient who has tried nine products and is worse off than when they started. Dermapedia is where those answers get written down: the same explanation she would give in the room, available before an appointment or instead of one.
Evidence over hype
Skincare is full of marketing claims. Dermapedia separates those claims from what is actually known.
Where possible, articles are based on published medical research, clinical guidelines, and established dermatologic knowledge. Each page explains what has good evidence behind it, what is less certain, and where reasonable disagreement exists.
Dermapedia is also honest about the limits of any treatment. No ingredient, product, or procedure works for everyone.
Written for real people
Dermatology can be full of complicated terminology. Dermapedia translates it into plain English without stripping away the important science.
You shouldn't need a medical degree to understand why your skin is behaving the way it is — or what your treatment options are.
Dermapedia is an educational resource, not a substitute for seeing your own dermatologist. Your skin, medical history, medications, and goals all matter when deciding what treatment is right for you.
