Hyaluronic acid is the most oversold ingredient in skincare, and still worth using. It holds water at the surface, so skin looks smoother within minutes and feels less tight. It treats nothing — not acne, not pigment, not wrinkles. Apply it to damp skin and put a moisturizer on top, because on dry skin in dry air it pulls water from deeper down and that water evaporates.

What It Is

Hyaluronic acid is a large sugar molecule found throughout the body — in skin, joints and the fluid inside the eye. Its job is to hold water, and a very small amount binds a great deal of it. In skincare it usually appears as sodium hyaluronate, the salt form, which is more stable and absorbs a little better. Hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate and hyaluronan are the same family. Molecular size varies. Large molecules stay on the surface and form a film that slows water loss; small ones get a short way into the upper layers. Marketing makes more of this than the evidence supports. Despite the name it is not an acid in any way that matters. It does not exfoliate or sting, and has no effect on skin pH worth planning around. It is a humectant, like glycerin. Three things share the name and are not interchangeable: the serum on your shelf, the injectable filler a doctor places under the skin, and the capsules sold as a supplement. Evidence for one says nothing about the rest.

How It Works

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant — it draws water in and holds it. Skin holding more water is plumper, smoother and more flexible, so fine lines caused by dryness look softer within minutes. That is the effect people notice.

Where the water comes from matters. It can come from the product, from damp skin, from humid air, or from deeper in your own skin. In dry air with nothing sealed over the top, water drawn upward evaporates and skin feels tighter than before. Every humectant does this, which is why the advice is damp skin, then a moisturizer.

It does not repair the barrier. A healthy barrier depends on fats — ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids — arranged between the surface cells. Water is what those fats hold in. Adding water without addressing the fats is filling a container that leaks.

Hyaluronic acid does more inside the body than on top of it. It has a role in wound healing and cell signaling, and injected fillers work by taking up space rather than by hydrating. A serum on intact skin is doing the surface job; claims that borrow evidence from the other two uses are overreaching.

A humectant draws water into the outer layer and holds it there. Skin holding more water is plumper and more flexible, and fine lines caused by dryness soften within minutes. Hyaluronic acid is water-loving and, in most products, a very large molecule. Almost none of it crosses the barrier. It holds water at the surface, which is a real effect but a surface one.

These acids work at the surface. They break the bonds holding dead cells to each other, so the top layer sheds more evenly. Skin looks smoother and brighter, and anything applied afterwards gets in more easily.

The outermost layer, and the one every moisturizer is aiming at. It is dead — flattened cells stacked like bricks, with a mix of fats as the glue between them. That glue is what holds water in and keeps irritants out.

The outer layer, and the only one anything in a jar reaches. It renews itself constantly: a cell made at the bottom takes about a month to reach the surface and flake off. Most of what a skincare product does, it does here.

Holds a great deal of water, which makes skin look plumper straight away, but it seals nothing. In dry indoor air or a cold winter it can pull water up out of the deeper skin and let it evaporate, leaving the surface tighter than before. It is only useful here applied to damp skin with a cream over the top.

When to Apply
Onto damp skin, after cleansing, before moisturizer. Morning, night or both. The damp skin step is not a nicety — it gives the ingredient water to hold rather than taking yours.
How to Start
No ramp-up. One of the few actives with no adaptation period; almost anyone can use it daily from the first application.
If It Irritates
Uncommon, and usually something else in the formula — fragrance, a preservative, alcohol. Skin that feels tight rather than itchy means you are using it on dry skin with nothing over the top, not reacting to it.
If It’s Not Working
Check what you expected. It will not clear acne, fade pigment or soften an established wrinkle. If skin is still dry, the missing part is fats and a seal — ceramides, glycerin, squalane or petrolatum.

What to Avoid

  • Applying it to bone-dry skin in dry air The one genuine way to make it work against you. Damp skin first, moisturizer after.
  • Leaving it uncovered as your last step The water it holds evaporates and takes some of yours with it.
  • Stacking hyaluronic acid products Three or four all do the same thing. The second adds a layer and a cost, not a result.
  • Expecting it to replace a moisturizer A humectant is one third of one; the fats and the seal are the other two.
  • Alcohol-heavy toners underneath it They dry skin faster than the serum can hydrate it.
  • The folklore hyaluronic acid gets grouped with glycolic and salicylic acid, and people are told to space it from other actives or worry about its pH. It is a humectant sugar, not an exfoliant, and it layers with anything, thinner before thicker. The other story is that the molecule is too large to work — large molecules were never meant to penetrate. They hold water at the surface.

If You Stop

Skin returns to how it was within a day or two. The plumping is water, and water leaves. No rebound and nothing to taper. Skin does not become dependent or make less of its own — a claim that circulates with no basis. Most people notice tightness after cleansing returning and dryness lines looking slightly more obvious. With a good moisturizer still in the routine, the difference is often small.

Something in that formula does not suit you. Try a fragrance-free version.

Myths

  • “Hyaluronic acid is an exfoliating acid.” It is not. It does not remove dead skin, does not sting, and needs no spacing from retinoids or vitamin C.
  • “It dehydrates your skin in dry weather.” Partly true. With no water available and nothing sealing it in, a humectant draws water up from deeper skin, which evaporates. Damp skin and a moisturizer prevent it.
  • “A serum works like a filler.” Fillers are injected into the skin by a clinician, where they take up space. A serum sits on the surface and holds water. Same molecule, unrelated jobs.
  • “Taking it as a supplement plumps your skin.” The evidence for oral hyaluronic acid is thin and the studies small. It does not substitute for anything you apply.
  • “You need to match molecular weights.” Brands make a great deal of multi-weight formulas. Plausible idea, weak evidence that it matters in practice.
  • “Expensive versions work better.” The ingredient costs very little. You are paying for the rest of the formula, and sometimes the bottle.

Does molecular weight actually matter?

A little, and less than the marketing suggests. Large molecules stay on the surface and form a film that slows water loss; smaller ones get a short way in. No strong evidence that a particular blend beats a well-made simple formula.

Why does my hydrating serum make my skin feel tighter?

Almost always because it is going onto dry skin in dry air with nothing over it. A humectant needs a water source; without one it takes yours, and that evaporates. Damp skin and a moisturizer on top usually fixes it.

Is an expensive serum better than a cheap one?

Rarely, for this ingredient. It is cheap, well understood, and most products use similar amounts. The differences are texture, preservatives, packaging and whatever else is in the bottle.

Is it the same as the filler my friend had?

The molecule is related. The products are not. Fillers are injected by a clinician and work by taking up space; a serum sits on the surface and holds water. Nothing you apply at home does that.

Can I use it with retinol, vitamin C or acids?

Yes, with all of them, in any order that runs thinnest to thickest. It deactivates nothing, and it is often used to take the edge off a retinoid.

Should I take hyaluronic acid supplements?

The evidence is thin. Small studies suggest mild benefits for skin hydration — not enough to recommend it. Sunscreen and a decent moisturizer are better places to spend the money.
