The disappointment I see most often is someone who paid for six sessions on hair the laser was never going to see: the target is pigment, and gray, white, red and very blond hair has too little of it, so the answer there is electrolysis, not a different clinic. The other word I repeat is reduction — a finished course leaves far fewer, finer hairs, and most people need a top-up once or twice a year. If facial hair is new, coarse and increasing, I want to know why first, because a hormonal driver switches on new follicles faster than the laser retires them. On deeper skin tones a 1064 nm Nd:YAG is the safe choice and older alexandrite machines and IPL are where the burns and pale patches come from, so ask what wavelength they use and ask for a test patch before booking a course.

A laser aimed at the pigment inside the hair, which heats and damages the follicle growing it. Three wavelengths are in common use: 755 nm alexandrite, 810 nm diode and 1064 nm Nd:YAG. They differ in how deep they reach and how much the skin's own pigment competes for the energy, which decides which suits your skin tone. IPL is not a laser but is often sold as one: broadband light, filtered rather than tuned. It works on dark hair and lighter skin, but it is less precise and riskier on deeper skin tones. The approved US wording is permanent hair reduction, chosen carefully: a lasting drop in the number of hairs, not skin that never grows hair again.

Melanin, the pigment in the hair shaft, absorbs the laser light and turns it into heat. The heat runs down the shaft to the base of the follicle and the cells partway up it, and damages the follicle's ability to grow another hair. Nothing is aimed at the skin; the hair is the antenna.
Hair grows in cycles, and only follicles in the growing phase have a pigmented hair attached to the target. The rest are resting and effectively invisible to the laser. That is why treatment is a course spaced weeks apart, and why hair keeps appearing between visits.
The skin contains melanin too, so it competes for the same light. The greater the contrast between dark hair and lighter skin, the easier the job. Longer wavelengths such as 1064 nm are absorbed less by surface pigment and reach deeper, which is why the Nd:YAG is safer on deeper skin tones; surface cooling protects further. Where the hair has almost no pigment there is nothing to absorb the light, and no setting changes that.
Skin is about two millimetres thick on the face. How deep a treatment reaches decides what it can change, and whether it treats all of the skin or scattered columns of it decides how long you take to heal.

This works below the skin altogether, in the fat or the muscle beneath it. Nothing applied to the surface reaches here, which is the whole reason the procedure exists — and why it is done by injection, by needle or with a blade rather than with a cream.
A peel or a scrub takes the skin off evenly from the surface down. Everything above the line goes and nothing below it is touched, which is why peels suit surface pigment and rough texture, and why the whole face flakes for a few days after.
Needles make hundreds of separate channels and leave the skin between them untouched. That untouched skin is what heals the rest, so recovery is quick — but a needle only injures the skin to start repair. It removes nothing.
The light passes through the surface and heats a column underneath it. The surface stays whole, so you leave red rather than raw — and it takes a course of sessions rather than one.
The laser removes columns of skin outright: the white gaps here are tissue that is gone, and new skin grows in from the sides. The strongest of the four, and the longest to heal.
The outer layer, and the only one anything in a jar reaches. It renews itself constantly: a cell made at the bottom takes about a month to reach the surface and flake off. Most of what a skincare product does, it does here.
The living layer underneath, holding the blood vessels, the nerves and the collagen. It is where lasting change happens and it is hard to reach: most of what is sold for the skin never gets this far.

Redness and small bumps for a day or two are expected. The problems that matter come from too much energy for the skin tone, tanned skin, or the wrong device.
In Deeper Skin Tones

Laser hair removal works well on deeper skin tones with the right device. Melanin in the surface of the skin competes with the hair for the light, so the risk is the skin absorbing energy meant for the follicle.
The 1064 nm Nd:YAG is the safe choice: absorbed least by skin pigment, deep enough to reach the follicle. Safe practice means longer pulses, lower energy, strong surface cooling, a test patch with a week or two of waiting, and more spacing between sessions. Older alexandrite devices and IPL cause most reported burns and pale patches on deeper skin tones. The Nd:YAG stings more; that is the trade-off.
Never be treated on tanned skin or after self-tanner. If a dark patch appears, treat it early with strict sun protection and a pigment cream if advised, rather than booking the next session.
One condition worth naming: razor bumps, or pseudofolliculitis barbae, where coarse curly hair grows back into the skin. The Nd:YAG genuinely helps, and this is one of the few times hair removal is medical rather than cosmetic. Ask which wavelength the clinic uses.
If You Stop

There is no rebound and no penalty for stopping. Destroyed follicles do not come back. What returns is hair from follicles that were only weakened, and from those that were resting.
Most people who stop partway keep a real reduction, with gradual return over months to a couple of years, usually finer and sparser. Hair does not grow back thicker after laser; the shedding of treated hairs after a session is often mistaken for it.
If hormones are driving the growth, return is faster because new follicles keep switching on. Treating the driver alongside the laser is what makes the result hold.

Packages of six are cheaper per session, but buying before a test patch means paying before you know whether your hair responds. Very low prices often mean IPL, not a laser. Insurance treats hair removal as cosmetic and almost never covers it. Two partial exceptions: recurrent pilonidal disease, and hair removal before some gender-affirming surgeries. Both vary by plan and need pre-approval.

Rules on who may operate a hair removal laser vary by state: some limit it to physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners, others allow trained technicians under supervision. Medical spas and salons fall under different rules than medical offices.
The question that matters most is which device is in the room. Ask for the wavelength by name, not the brand: 755 nm alexandrite, 810 nm diode or 1064 nm Nd:YAG. Ask whether IPL is being sold as laser, ask for a test patch, ask how many patients with your skin tone they treat, and what they would do about a burn or a dark patch.
Red flags: a promise of permanent removal, a package sold before a test patch, no eye protection for everyone, one device for every skin tone, treating visibly tanned skin, and no discussion of what your hair color means.

Yes, and you should. Shaving leaves the root in place, which is what the laser needs. Waxing, plucking and threading remove the target and waste the appointment.
