Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser is a clear gel that foams, in a large pump bottle for around $12, aimed at combination to oily skin. It is a plain wash, not a treatment. No acid, no benzoyl peroxide, nothing meant to stay on the skin and work.

Cocamidopropyl betaine and a sulfosuccinate do the cleaning, two mild surfactants chosen instead of harsher sulfates. Glycerin, panthenol and niacinamide soften the rinse. It also contains a masking fragrance — fragrance used to cover the smell of raw ingredients rather than to add a scent. Skin cannot tell the difference.

How much: A small pump foamed with water, then massaged over wet skin for about twenty seconds. Use lukewarm water; hot adds redness without cleaning better.
Tip: It removes sunscreen and most makeup; the non-foaming Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser will not. The two look almost identical, so check the bottle.
Careful: It contains a masking fragrance, and cocamidopropyl betaine was named Allergen of the Year in 2004 by the American Contact Dermatitis Society. If gentle cleansers have made you itch before, patch test on your neck first.
What to expect: Skin feels clean straight away, with nothing to build up to. If your face feels tight ten minutes later, you are washing too often or the water is too hot.

Skin oil, sunscreen and makeup are all oily, and water will not shift oil on its own. Surfactants do — each molecule grips oil at one end and water at the other, so the rinse water carries the oil away. A surfactant cannot tell your barrier fats from the oil you want gone, so a harsh one takes both. That is what a tight, squeaky face after washing is.

This one uses cocamidopropyl betaine and a sulfosuccinate instead of harsher sulfates. They foam properly and remove sunscreen, which the Gentle Skin Cleanser will not, while taking less of the barrier with them. The glycerin, panthenol and niacinamide soften the rinse, but a cleanser is on the skin for under a minute.

The masking fragrance is the thing worth knowing. Fragrance is a leading cause of cosmetic contact allergy, and masking fragrance is still fragrance. In a wash sold for sensitive skin that is hard to defend when Cetaphil's own Gentle Skin Cleanser manages without it.
