Recommend.

A good foaming wash for combination to oily skin, and it does remove sunscreen, which the Gentle Skin Cleanser does not. Check the bottle — the two look alike on the shelf. It contains masking fragrance, which is still fragrance and a leading cause of contact allergy. If your skin is sensitive, take the Gentle version.

A surfactant has a water-loving end and an oil-loving end. It surrounds oil and carries it off in the rinse water, which is the only way oil leaves skin.

This one uses two mild surfactants and still foams properly, so it clears a day of oil without the squeaky, stripped feeling soap leaves.

Good fit

Sunscreen is built to stay put through sweat and water, so water alone will not lift it. This will; the non-foaming Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser next to it on the shelf will not.

If you wear sunscreen daily, that is the difference that matters.

Inflamed acne on light skin. The spots sit in a patch of pink, and the ring of redness around each one is easy to see. A few have a yellow-white head, and the skin between them is dry and flaking.

Washing does not treat acne, and scrubbing makes inflamed skin worse. A cleanser's job is to clear oil and leftover product so benzoyl peroxide or adapalene reaches the skin.

How this formula works.

Surfactants do — each molecule grips oil at one end and water at the other, so the rinse water carries the oil away. A surfactant cannot tell your barrier fats from the oil you want gone, so a harsh one takes both. That is what a tight, squeaky face after washing is.

This one uses cocamidopropyl betaine and a sulfosuccinate instead of harsher sulfates. They foam properly and remove sunscreen, which the Gentle Skin Cleanser will not, while taking less of the barrier with them. The glycerin, panthenol and niacinamide soften the rinse, but a cleanser is on the skin for under a minute.

The masking fragrance is the thing worth knowing. Fragrance is a leading cause of cosmetic contact allergy, and masking fragrance is still fragrance. In a wash sold for sensitive skin that is hard to defend when Cetaphil's own Gentle Skin Cleanser manages without it.

Careful

It contains a masking fragrance, and cocamidopropyl betaine was named Allergen of the Year in 2004 by the American Contact Dermatitis Society. If gentle cleansers have made you itch before, patch test on your neck first.
