A chemical sunscreen so light it disappears. SPF 60, oxybenzone-free, and one of the few high-SPF facial sunscreens that leaves no cast.

Dermatologist's Verdict

The sunscreen I recommend when a mineral formula leaves a cast. Its filters absorb ultraviolet light rather than sitting on the surface, so it disappears on every skin tone. Check the box says fluid — the Ultra Light Spray is a different product. Keep it off the eyelid margin; it stings.

The short versionWhat It Is

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Light Fluid Facial Sunscreen is an SPF 60 face sunscreen, about $33 to $40. It is a daily sunscreen with a matte finish, not a moisturizer. Check the name on the box — La Roche-Posay also sells an Anthelios Ultra Light Spray that sounds identical and is a different product.

The filters are avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene, all organic filters that absorb ultraviolet light rather than scattering it off the surface. It is fragrance-free and made without oxybenzone. The base is watery rather than creamy, so it spreads like nothing and dries down flat.

Where it earns its keepWhat It Treats

Sun Damage (Photoaging)
Sun Damage (Photoaging)
Works well
Ultraviolet A passes through cloud and window glass all year and reaches the layer where collagen sits. A sunscreen light enough for an ordinary indoor day beats a heavier one saved for the beach.
Melasma
Melasma
Works some
Melasma comes back with light exposure, so daily high protection does as much as what you put on the patch. SPF 60 with avobenzone covers the long ultraviolet A wavelengths that keep pigment cells on.
Oily Skin
Oily Skin
Good fit
Oily skin skips sunscreen because it feels like grease on grease. This dries to a flat matte finish and adds no oil of its own.
Sensitive Skin
Sensitive Skin
Use with care
Fragrance-free and built without oxybenzone. Organic filters can still migrate and sting as you sweat, so keep it off the eyelid margin. If chemical filters sting every time, take the Anthelios Mineral.

How it feelsTexture

A runny fluid rather than a cream. It spreads like water, sinks in within seconds, and dries to a flat matte finish with no white cast on any skin tone.

Makeup goes over it without pilling once dry, which takes under a minute. Fragrance-free.

It migrates as you sweat and can sting the eyes, the usual complaint with organic filters. This one is thin enough to travel.

The house rulesHow to Use La Roche-Posay Anthelios Light Fluid Facial Sunscreen

How much: A quarter teaspoon for the face. It looks like far too much in a fluid. Use it anyway — the label SPF assumes it.
Where: Face, ears, neck and hairline. Keep it off the eyelid margin; it moves when you sweat.
Reapply: Every two hours outdoors, and after sweating or swimming. Store it out of the heat — octocrylene breaks down faster when hot.
What to expect: Nothing you can see. Sunscreen prevents damage; the payoff is the pigment and lines you never develop.

What's insideHow La Roche-Posay Anthelios Light Fluid Facial Sunscreen Works

Ultraviolet light damages skin across two ranges. Ultraviolet B is the short wavelength that burns the surface. Ultraviolet A is longer, reaches the deeper layer where collagen sits, and drives photoaging and pigment. Sunscreen has to cover both. Mineral filters scatter light off a layer of white powder, which is why they cast gray on deeper skin tones. Organic filters absorb it into the molecule, so nothing sits on the surface.

This one uses four organic filters and no minerals. Avobenzone handles ultraviolet A. Homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene handle ultraviolet B, and octocrylene also stabilizes avobenzone, which breaks down in sunlight on its own.

The reason to care is the base, not the filters. High-SPF sunscreens are usually thick, people apply too little of a thick sunscreen, and that cuts their protection. This one vanishes, so the label dose is one you might realistically apply.

Sunscreen works before anything else does: it stops the light that switches pigment cells on and damages DNA from reaching them. Nothing that fades a mark can outrun light still landing on it every day. The main UVA filter in chemical sunscreens, and it needs a stabilizer.

Avobenzone is a filter that works in the film of sunscreen on top of the skin, absorbing UV before it reaches living cells. A small amount is absorbed into the body, which is why it is reviewed regularly.

The outer film of dead cells and oil. It holds water in and keeps irritants out, and it is thinner than a sheet of paper. Almost every dry, itchy, stinging skin problem starts here.

The outer layer, and the only one anything in a jar reaches. It renews itself constantly: a cell made at the bottom takes about a month to reach the surface and flake off. Most of what a skincare product does, it does here.

The living layer underneath, holding the blood vessels, the nerves and the collagen. It is where lasting change happens and it is hard to reach: most of what is sold for the skin never gets this far.

A thin film that slows water leaving the skin.

A fatty emulsifier that softens the surface as well as holding the formula together.

The outermost layer, and the one every moisturizer is aiming at. It is dead — flattened cells stacked like bricks, with a mix of fats as the glue between them. That glue is what holds water in and keeps irritants out.

This is how many ingredients are on the label. The more a product contains, the more chances one of them bothers you. That matters most if you have sensitive skin, eczema, or a known allergy. If your skin tolerates most things, a long list is not a problem by itself.

The fine printA Dermatologist’s Concerns

It uses only chemical filters: 100% chemical. If you avoid those on principle, look at the Anthelios Mineral.

May sting the eyes: avobenzone and octocrylene are common offenders. Keep it off the eyelid margin.

A similar name is a different product: La Roche-Posay sells an "Anthelios Ultra Light Spray SPF 60" that sounds nearly identical, and that one still contains oxybenzone. The face fluid does not.

Heat breaks down one filter: octocrylene degrades over time into benzophenone, especially with heat. Do not use a bottle left in a hot car all last summer.

What it runsPrice per Ounce

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Light Fluid Facial Sunscreen costs $22 per ounce. That is cheaper than 14 of the other 19 sunscreens priced on Dermapedia, which run from $6.33 to $233 per ounce.

A quarter teaspoon for the face means a bottle lasts a few weeks of daily wear. Sunscreen goes far faster than a moisturizer the same size, so per-ounce comparisons flatter it.
