Sunscreen filters work one of two ways. Chemical filters absorb UV and release it as heat. Mineral filters, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, sit on the surface and scatter it. Because they do not have to be absorbed to work, they are the usual choice for reactive skin, rosacea, and skin healing after a procedure.

This one pairs 6 percent titanium dioxide with 5 percent zinc oxide. Titanium is strongest against UVB and short UVA. Zinc covers the longer UVA wavelengths titanium misses, the ones that reach collagen. Together they reach SPF 50 with no chemical filter.

Mineral formulas usually cost you weight and a visible film. This avoids most of that, because the filters are carried in silicones and volatile oils that evaporate and leave a thinner layer. A cast still remains — La Roche-Posay says so themselves. On deeper skin tones, expect it.
