Dermatologist’s verdict
Mixed
This is two sunscreens sharing one name. The Korean SPF 50+ uses filters the United States has not approved and reaches American buyers through importers, where storage and expiry cannot be verified. The US SPF 45 is a different chemistry. Buy the US version from Round Lab's own site.
What it is
ROUND LAB Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen is a light, creamy face sunscreen known for feeling like a moisturizer. It is daily sun protection and nothing else.
Two different products share the name. The Korean SPF 50+ formula uses UV filters Korea allows and the United States does not, and it reaches American buyers only through importers. Round Lab also sells a US SPF 45 version with avobenzone, homosalate and octisalate. Both are lotions that spread thin and disappear, helped by glycerin and hyaluronic acid, plus niacinamide and birch sap. The texture is the point of the product.
What it does
A chemical sunscreen filter absorbs ultraviolet light and releases the energy as a little heat, so the light never reaches the living cells below. UVB burns the surface. UVA goes deeper, into the layer where collagen sits, and it drives most of what people call aging skin. No single filter covers every wavelength.
That is why the two versions behave differently. Korea approves newer filters, including Tinosorb M and Uvinul A Plus, which cover UVA broadly and feel light. The US list has not been updated in decades, so the US SPF 45 version uses avobenzone for UVA with homosalate and octisalate for UVB. Both protect. They are not the same formula, and only the US one is regulated here.
The rest of the bottle is a moisturizer: glycerin and hyaluronic acid to pull in water, plus niacinamide, birch sap and panthenol. Pleasant is what gets a sunscreen worn every day.
What it treats
## Sensitive Skin | Good fit People finish a bottle because it does not sting or feel heavy, and the sunscreen you wear is the one that works. The base is simple — glycerin, panthenol and licorice root, none of them common stingers. It does contain small amounts of pine and chamomile oil, so patch test if plant oils have caught you out.
## Dry Skin (Xerosis) | Good fit Most sunscreens dry down flat and leave dry skin tight by lunchtime. This one holds water against the skin, so it behaves like a light moisturizer with UV filters in it. On very dry skin, put a cream underneath.
## Sun Damage (Photoaging) | Strong Most of what people call aging skin is UVA damage. UVA reaches the deeper layer where collagen sits and breaks it down slowly, all year, through window glass. A sunscreen only works while it is on your face, so a texture you do not mind matters more than the number on the bottle.
Best for
**Two different sunscreens share this name:** two sunscreens carry nearly the same name, and they are not the same product.
**The Korean version is not FDA approved:** the Korean SPF 50+ formula uses Tinosorb M, Uvinul A Plus, Uvinul T and Uvasorb HEB, none of them FDA-approved. It cannot legally be sold here as a sunscreen, and it reaches American buyers only through importers and resellers, with no guarantee of storage, authenticity or expiry. A gray market, not a regulated one.
**The US version is a different formula:** the US formula, sold by Round Lab directly, is SPF 45 with avobenzone, homosalate and octisalate. Same brand, same name, different chemistry.
**Check which one you are buying:** neither is wrong to buy, but know which you have. The Korean texture means an unregulated import; the FDA-regulated option means buying from Round Lab's US site and accepting a different formula.
**SPF testing scandals hit Korean brands:** korean SPF labels have a credibility history. In 2021, independent testing found several Korean sunscreens far below their labeled SPF, traced to contract manufacturers reusing old test data. Reports conflict on whether this brand was affected, and we will not guess.
Texture
Lotion A light, creamy lotion that spreads thin and sinks in fast, with no white cast on any skin tone.
It leaves skin slightly dewy rather than dry or powdery, and makeup goes over it after a minute.
The texture is why people keep wearing it, which is the point of a sunscreen.
How to use it
## How to use it How much: About a quarter teaspoon for the face. Most people apply a third of what the SPF number was tested with, and get a third of the protection. Where: Face, ears, the sides of the neck and the hairline — where sun damage and skin cancers turn up. Reapply: Every two hours outdoors, and after sweating, swimming or toweling off. Chemical filters are used up as they absorb light. What to expect: Nothing visible, ever. Sunscreen prevents damage, it does not repair it. If you buy the Korean version through an importer, check the expiry date — filters degrade with heat and age.
