The first conversation is always about time. A professional tattoo often needs ten or more sessions, six to eight weeks apart — a year or two, not a season. The second is about color: black clears most reliably, green and light blue need a wavelength not every clinic owns, and yellow, white and pastel shades often barely move. What I never promise is blank skin, and going faster does not clear ink sooner — stronger settings and shorter gaps mostly raise the odds of a scar or a pale patch where the tattoo used to be.

A Q-switched laser fires very short, very strong pulses of light — billionths of a second. Tattoo ink absorbs the pulse and shatters, and the body clears the fragments over the following weeks. "Q-switched" describes the pulse length, not the color of the light. One machine usually carries two or three wavelengths; the provider picks the one matching the ink. Picosecond lasers do the same job with an even shorter pulse and clear some inks, particularly green and blue, in fewer sessions. Both work by repetition. No single session removes a tattoo.

Tattoo ink sits in the deeper layer of skin as particles too large for immune cells to carry away, which is why a tattoo is permanent. The laser pulse is shorter than the time a particle needs to shed heat, so the energy stays trapped and the particle breaks apart. Immune cells then carry the fragments out through the lymph system over weeks — which is why nothing changes on the day and the fading shows up a month later.
Each color absorbs a different wavelength. The 1064 nm beam suits black and dark blue, 532 nm handles red and orange, and green and light blue usually need a 694 nm or 755 nm beam that not every clinic has. Yellow, white and pastel shades absorb poorly at every available wavelength — the main reason some tattoos never clear.
Melanin absorbs those same wavelengths, the shorter ones most strongly. That competition limits how much energy can be used, and it is why wavelength choice matters more on deeper skin tones.
Skin is about two millimetres thick on the face. How deep a treatment reaches decides what it can change, and whether it treats all of the skin or scattered columns of it decides how long you take to heal.

Skin basics
This works around one to one and a half millimetres down, in the middle of the dermis where collagen is made. That is the depth that changes scarring and firmness, and it is also why the downtime is longer and the result takes months to appear.
A peel or a scrub takes the skin off evenly from the surface down. Everything above the line goes and nothing below it is touched, which is why peels suit surface pigment and rough texture, and why the whole face flakes for a few days after.
Needles make hundreds of separate channels and leave the skin between them untouched. That untouched skin is what heals the rest, so recovery is quick — but a needle only injures the skin to start repair. It removes nothing.
The light passes through the surface and heats a column underneath it. The surface stays whole, so you leave red rather than raw — and it takes a course of sessions rather than one.
The laser removes columns of skin outright: the white gaps here are tissue that is gone, and new skin grows in from the sides. The strongest of the four, and the longest to heal.
The outer layer, and the only one anything in a jar reaches. It renews itself constantly: a cell made at the bottom takes about a month to reach the surface and flake off. Most of what a skincare product does, it does here.
The living layer underneath, holding the blood vessels, the nerves and the collagen. It is where lasting change happens and it is hard to reach: most of what is sold for the skin never gets this far.

Redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding, blistering and scabbing after each session are expected, not complications. The risks worth knowing are the ones that outlast the healing.
In Deeper Skin Tones

Melanin absorbs the same wavelengths as tattoo ink, so on deeper skin tones the laser has competition for its energy. That is a settings problem, not a barrier — tattoos clear on every skin tone, but wavelength, energy and pacing all change.
The 1064 nm wavelength is used most, because melanin absorbs it least. The shorter wavelengths needed for red, orange, green and light blue are absorbed far more by melanin, so colored ink is harder and settings more cautious. Expect lower energy, a test spot in a hidden part of the tattoo, and gaps of eight weeks or more.
Two problems account for most of the trouble — a pale patch where pigment has been lost, which can be lasting, and a brown patch of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which usually fades over months with strict sun protection and sometimes a pigment cream. Do not be treated on tanned skin, and treat a new dark patch early rather than pushing on to the next session.
Ask which wavelengths the device carries, how often the clinic treats skin like yours, and what they would do if a pale patch appeared.
If You Stop

Stopping partway is a normal choice and nothing is lost. Ink that has cleared does not come back, so you keep whatever fading you reached. The tattoo will just be lighter, and often patchier, since some colors clear faster than others.
Fading continues for a few months after the last session while the immune system clears broken ink, so wait three months before deciding you are finished.
From there the options are living with the faded tattoo, having it covered by a tattoo artist, or restarting later. A long gap does not undo progress.

Who may operate a tattoo laser varies widely by state — some restrict it to physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners, others allow trained technicians under supervision, and a few barely regulate it. The device and the person setting it matter more than the clinic's decor.
Ask which wavelengths the machine carries and which of your colors each one treats, how many sessions they estimate and on what basis, whether they will do a test spot, how they handle blistering, and what they would do if a pale or dark patch appeared. If your skin tone is deeper, ask how often they treat skin like yours.
Red flags: a guarantee of complete removal, a large package sold before the tattoo has been examined, a single-wavelength device promised to clear every color, no eye protection for everyone in the room, no test spot before treating cosmetic or flesh-tone ink, and pressure to book sessions closer together than six weeks.

- "The laser burns the ink out of the skin." It breaks the ink into fragments that immune cells carry away over weeks — which is why nothing changes on the day and the fading appears a month later.
- "Any tattoo can be removed completely." Many fade to a faint shadow instead. Yellow, white and pastel inks absorb the laser poorly, and no device changes that.
- "Removal creams work if you keep using them long enough." Nothing applied to the surface reaches ink in the deeper layer of skin. Some contain strong acids and cause burns and scars.
- "Picosecond lasers clear any tattoo in a couple of sessions." Genuinely faster for some inks, especially green, blue and dense black. Still a course of treatment, not a shortcut.
- "A newer tattoo is easier to remove." Older tattoos have already faded and their ink has partly dispersed, so they respond faster than dense, freshly packed modern work.

Will the tattoo be gone completely?
Sometimes, but it cannot be promised. Heavy fading is the realistic goal; some tattoos leave a faint shadow, usually because of yellow, white or pastel ink.
Does it hurt more than getting the tattoo?
Each pulse is sharper, but the session is much shorter — most people describe hot fat spitting on the skin. Numbing cream or injected anesthetic makes it manageable.
Which colors are hardest to remove?

Why did my cosmetic tattoo turn black?
Flesh-tone, white and cosmetic inks contain iron and titanium compounds the laser can change chemically, turning them gray or black instantly. That is why a test spot in a hidden area comes first for eyebrow, lip liner and areola tattoos. Further sessions sometimes clear the darkened ink and sometimes do not.
