Oxybenzone protects well — UVB and short UVA, cheaply, and it stabilizes avobenzone, which is why it sat in so many American sunscreens for so long. Two things are worth knowing. It causes allergic and light-triggered rashes more often than any other sunscreen filter, which is why I steer reactive skin away from it; and the FDA found blood levels well above the threshold that triggers a request for further study, then asked for more data rather than telling anyone to stop. In practice this rarely needs a decision — most brands have already reformulated away from it, and if you own a bottle that suits you, using it is not a mistake, while skipping sunscreen is.

What It Is

Oxybenzone, listed as benzophenone-3, is a lab-made compound used in sunscreen since the 1970s. It is one of the oldest chemical filters still in wide use. In the United States it is an over-the-counter drug active allowed at up to 6%. It sits in the group of filters the FDA has asked for more safety data on before classifying them as generally recognized as safe and effective — a request for evidence, not a finding against the ingredient. Several places have banned it in sunscreen on environmental grounds, including Hawaii, Key West, the US Virgin Islands, Palau, Bonaire and Thailand. Those laws mostly cover oxybenzone and octinoxate together. Partly because of the bans and partly consumer pressure, many manufacturers reformulated without it, so it is far less common on American shelves than a decade ago. It is also used outside sunscreen, in small amounts, as a stabilizer that keeps fragrances and plastics from degrading in light.
How It Works

Oxybenzone absorbs ultraviolet light. The molecule takes in the energy, rearranges briefly, releases it as a little heat, and resets. Like other chemical filters it has to sink into the outer layer of skin to form an even film, which is why it wants fifteen to twenty minutes before sun exposure and leaves no visible trace.
Its range covers UVB and the shorter part of UVA. It does not reach far into long UVA, so it is no substitute for avobenzone or zinc oxide, and a sunscreen relying on it alone has a gap at the deepest-penetrating wavelengths.
Its second job is less known. Oxybenzone is comparatively photostable and helps hold avobenzone together, slowing how fast that UVA filter breaks down in sunlight. For years that partnership was how American sunscreens delivered stable broad spectrum protection.
It is also the most absorbed of the common filters. In FDA studies it reached blood levels far above the 0.5 nanograms per milliliter threshold that triggers further safety testing, and stayed detectable for days after use stopped. Absorption is a reason to study something, not evidence of harm.

Skin basics
Sunscreen works before anything else does: it stops the light that switches pigment cells on and damages DNA from reaching them. Nothing that fades a mark can outrun light still landing on it every day. An older chemical filter, and a more common cause of allergy.
Oxybenzone works in the sunscreen film on the surface. It is absorbed more than the other filters, which is why it has been the most scrutinized and why some brands have dropped it.
The outer film of dead cells and oil. It holds water in and keeps irritants out, and it is thinner than a sheet of paper. Almost every dry, itchy, stinging skin problem starts here.
The outer layer, and the only one anything in a jar reaches. It renews itself constantly: a cell made at the bottom takes about a month to reach the surface and flake off. Most of what a skincare product does, it does here.
The living layer underneath, holding the blood vessels, the nerves and the collagen. It is where lasting change happens and it is hard to reach: most of what is sold for the skin never gets this far.

If You Stop

Nothing rebounds. Protection ends the day you stop, and UV starts accumulating again. Because oxybenzone covers UVB and short UVA, easier burning returns first. Pigment changes are slower and depend on what else was in the formula. Most people who stop are switching rather than quitting, to a mineral sunscreen or a chemical formula built without it. Nothing is lost — other filters cover the same range, and modern formulas use octocrylene or another partner to stabilize avobenzone.

Myths

- "Oxybenzone causes cancer." No study in people has shown that. The concern comes from animal work at doses far beyond what skin application delivers, and from the fact that it is absorbed. Neither establishes a cancer risk in humans.
- "It is a hormone disruptor." It shows weak hormone-like activity in laboratory and animal studies, at exposures far above what topical use produces. Human studies have not found clinical hormonal effects. A genuine open question, which is why the FDA asked for more data.
- "The FDA said sunscreen is unsafe." It said the opposite. Its studies found several filters, oxybenzone most of all, absorbed into the blood above the level that triggers further testing. The agency stated plainly that absorption does not mean harm and that people should keep using sunscreen.
- "Oxybenzone killed the reefs." Laboratory studies found harm to coral larvae at certain concentrations, and that work drove the bans. Its contribution in open water is argued, and marine scientists consistently put warming and acidifying oceans as the dominant cause of bleaching.
- "Reef safe sunscreen is a regulated term." It is not. Any product can print it, including ones with filters that have shown laboratory harm.
- "If it is banned somewhere, it must be dangerous to people." Those bans are environmental laws about coral, not human safety rulings.

Should I throw out sunscreen that contains oxybenzone?
No. Using a sunscreen you own beats using none while you shop. If you are buying new, plenty of products use other filters.
Is oxybenzone dangerous?
No harm in people has been established after decades of use. What is established is that it is absorbed into the blood more than other filters, that it shows weak hormone-like activity in laboratory studies at high exposures, and that regulators have asked for more data. Reasons to study it, not evidence of harm.
Why is it banned in Hawaii?
The bans are environmental. Laboratory work found oxybenzone and octinoxate can harm coral larvae, and several island governments acted on it. Its effect in the ocean is still debated, and researchers rank warming water as the far larger threat.
Is it what made my skin react?
Possibly. It is the most common cause of allergic and light-triggered rashes among sunscreen filters. If a sunscreen gave you a red, itchy eruption on sun-exposed skin, ask about patch testing rather than switching blindly to another product that may contain it.
Does oxybenzone give better protection than newer filters?
It gives good UVB and short UVA cover, but it is not uniquely strong. Other filters cover the same range, and formulas built without it test just as well.
Is it safe during pregnancy?
This is the filter most people choose to avoid in pregnancy, because it is the most absorbed and its hormone questions are unresolved. Mineral filters are the usual alternative. Ask the doctor managing your pregnancy, who knows your full picture.
