Titanium dioxide is zinc oxide's quieter partner — excellent against burning and about as gentle as skincare gets, which is why it is in baby sunscreens and in what I hand out after a laser. It covers long UVA poorly, the wavelengths that drive pigment and photoaging, so a titanium-only sunscreen is not full protection. That rarely matters in real bottles, since it is almost always blended with zinc oxide or chemical filters; if it is the only mineral filter listed, I want the label to say broad spectrum. The two headlines people have read, the cancer classification and the European food ban, are about swallowing or inhaling it, not about skin.

Titanium dioxide is a bright white mineral powder of titanium and oxygen, and among the most widely used white pigments in the world: paint, paper, toothpaste, cosmetics. It is the whiteness in most foundations, where it appears as CI 77891. In US sunscreen it is an active drug ingredient, not a cosmetic one, and with zinc oxide one of only two filters the FDA has proposed keeping in its generally recognized as safe and effective category. The legal maximum in a US sunscreen is 25%. Sunscreen-grade titanium dioxide is coated. The raw mineral is photocatalytic, so UV can make it generate reactive molecules, and the particles are coated in silica, alumina or dimethicone to stop that. Standard practice, and not something a label mentions.
How It Works

Titanium dioxide absorbs ultraviolet light and, to a smaller degree, scatters it. Like zinc oxide it gets called a physical blocker, and that name oversells the mirror effect. Absorption does most of the work.
Its range is where it differs. It is very strong across UVB and the shorter part of UVA, which is why it prevents sunburn so well, and it falls away in the longer UVA wavelengths, the ones that penetrate deepest and drive pigment, melasma and photoaging. Zinc oxide holds on further along that range.
So it works in a team. With zinc oxide it gives good UVB strength without a heavy load of zinc, keeping the film lighter. With chemical filters it does the same job in a more elegant base.
Gram for gram it is whiter than zinc oxide, because it bends light more strongly. That is why it is a good pigment and why it can look chalky.

Skin basics
Sunscreen works before anything else does: it stops the light that switches pigment cells on and damages DNA from reaching them. Nothing that fades a mark can outrun light still landing on it every day. A mineral filter, better on UVB than UVA, so it is usually paired.
Titanium dioxide is a mineral particle that stays on the surface. That is the job: it has to sit where the light lands.
The outer film of dead cells and oil. It holds water in and keeps irritants out, and it is thinner than a sheet of paper. Almost every dry, itchy, stinging skin problem starts here.
The outer layer, and the only one anything in a jar reaches. It renews itself constantly: a cell made at the bottom takes about a month to reach the surface and flake off. Most of what a skincare product does, it does here.
The living layer underneath, holding the blood vessels, the nerves and the collagen. It is where lasting change happens and it is hard to reach: most of what is sold for the skin never gets this far.

- Rubbing until the white disappears Thinning the film to make it invisible removes the protection.
- Using less than the tested amount Two fingers' length for the face and neck. Under-application is why a sunscreen seems to stop working.
- Treating titanium alone as full protection Check for zinc oxide or a UVA chemical filter, or at least the words broad spectrum.
- Breathing loose powder or spray The real safety questions concern the lungs. No loose powder indoors, and spray outdoors away from your head.
- Counting on SPF makeup alone Nobody applies foundation or powder thickly enough to reach the number on the box.
- Old or separated sunscreen Replace anything past its date or changed in texture or color.

Nothing rebounds. Protection ends when you stop, and UV exposure starts adding up that day. What you notice first, over weeks, is easier burning and slower fading of marks. Melasma commonly returns within a season. None of it is dramatic, which is why lapses are easy. Some people use sunscreen only in summer or on bright days. That is a defensible compromise for low-risk skin, but if you are treating pigment, have had a skin cancer, or take a medicine that raises sun sensitivity, year-round daily use is the foundation.

- "Titanium dioxide causes cancer." The International Agency for Research on Cancer called it possibly carcinogenic based on studies where rats inhaled large amounts of dust. That is about industrial dust in the lungs, not a cream on skin.
- "Europe banned it, so it must be dangerous." The European Union banned it as a food additive over unresolved questions about DNA damage when eaten. Eating it and applying it are different exposures, and the sunscreen approval stands.
- "Mineral filters reflect UV like a mirror." Absorption does most of the work, for titanium dioxide as for zinc oxide. Scattering is real but smaller.
- "Titanium dioxide covers UVA as well as zinc." It covers the shorter part of UVA well and the longer part poorly — the main practical difference between the two mineral filters.
- "Nanoparticles pass through your skin." Reviews consistently find coated nanoparticles stay in the outer dead layer of intact skin. The open question is inhalation, which is why sprays and loose powders carry a caution.
- "You have to wait twenty minutes before going outside." That comes from chemical filters. Mineral filters protect as soon as the layer is spread evenly.

Is titanium dioxide safe to put on skin?
Topical evidence is reassuring, and it is one of only two filters US regulators have proposed keeping in their safe and effective category. The alarming headlines come from swallowing it as a food additive and inhaling industrial dust, not from a sunscreen on skin.
Is it as good as zinc oxide?
Stronger against sunburn and often slightly gentler, but it does not cover long UVA as well. For pigment, melasma and photoaging that gap matters, so it is usually blended with zinc oxide.
Why does it look so white?
It bends light more strongly than almost any other white pigment, which is why it is used to make paint white. On skin that reads as chalkiness, most visible on deeper skin tones. A tinted formula with iron oxides fixes it.
Are the nanoparticles a problem?
On intact skin, reviews repeatedly find coated nanoparticles stay in the outer dead layer. Less is known about severely broken skin. The unresolved concern is breathing them in, which is why loose powders and sprays get a caution.
Can I use it on a baby?
Mineral sunscreens are what most pediatric guidance points to once sunscreen is used at all, and titanium dioxide is common in them. Under six months, shade and clothing first. Ask your pediatrician.
Does the percentage on the bottle tell me how protective it is?
No. SPF and broad spectrum are measured on the finished product. Two sunscreens with the same percentage can test very differently.
