GHK is a tripeptide — glycine, histidine and lysine. It occurs in human blood plasma and binds copper tightly. The bound form, GHK-Cu, is what skincare sells, listed as copper tripeptide-1. It is blue. It was identified decades ago during work on liver cells, and interest grew when it helped wounds heal in animals. Plasma levels appear to fall with age, which is what most of the marketing is built on. Everything sold to consumers is a cosmetic, not a medicine. The copper is what makes these products blue or green, and why a strong one can leave a faint tint on pale skin or mark a towel.

GHK-Cu does two things at once. It acts as a signal itself, and it carries copper, a mineral several repair enzymes need — one of them lysyl oxidase, which cross-links new collagen and elastin so they hold their shape.
In cell culture and animal wounds, GHK-Cu increases collagen and glycosaminoglycan production, draws in repair cells, and influences the enzymes that remodel skin. It also acts as an antioxidant and calms inflammatory signalling. That lab work is substantial, and it is why the ingredient is taken seriously.
The unestablished step is the one every peptide faces. GHK-Cu is small as peptides go, but it is water-loving and charged, and the barrier is built to keep that kind of molecule out. How much reaches the dermis from a serum is unknown.
Human studies exist and they are small. GHK-Cu creams have improved skin density, fine lines and sun damage over about twelve weeks against placebo, and in one comparison performed like a vitamin C or retinol product. Those trials were small, several industry-connected, and independent replication is scarce.

- A real chemical conflict This is the one peptide where layering rules have a basis — copper is a metal ion, and metal ions interact with strong antioxidants.
- Pure vitamin C in the same layer Ascorbic acid and copper can react and inactivate each other. One in the morning, one at night.
- Strong direct acids in the same layer Glycolic, salicylic and similar acids work at a low pH that can pull copper off the peptide. Use them at the other end of the day.
- Benzoyl peroxide and strong oxidizers Same reasoning. Nothing hazardous happens; the two just work against each other.
- Piling it into a crowded routine With five actives already, this is the most expensive layer and the easiest to waste.
- The folklore copper peptides are said to cause copper poisoning, or to damage collagen because copper can act as a pro-oxidant. Neither has been shown from a cosmetic on skin. The amounts are very small, and the worry comes from laboratory conditions, not from people using serums.

- "You must never use copper peptides with anything else." The advice is narrower. Keep them out of the same layer as pure vitamin C, strong acids and benzoyl peroxide. Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and sunscreen are fine.
- "The blue color shows it is working." The color is copper. A pale product can contain plenty; a deep blue one can be under-dosed.
- "Copper peptides regrow hair." That rests on laboratory work, not convincing human trials.
