CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion is a light, fragrance-free night lotion, about $14 to $19 depending on size. It is a plain moisturizer. No retinoid, no acid, so nothing in it treats acne, wrinkles or dark spots.

It is built on three ceramides plus cholesterol and phytosphingosine, the same fat mixture skin makes for itself. Niacinamide sits fourth and hyaluronic acid draws water in. Holding all that in a light lotion takes a set of thickeners, and that combination is why it rolls up under whatever you put on top.

A moisturizer has three moves: pull water into the outer layer, replace the fats that glue it together, or seal the surface. This one does the first two well and the third barely at all, which is why it is light. Hyaluronic acid and glycerin bring water in; three ceramides plus cholesterol replace the glue. Nothing occlusive sits on top, so very dry skin wants something richer over it.

Its other strength is niacinamide, fourth in the list — one of the better-evidenced ingredients in skincare for barrier repair, oil and pigment, though CeraVe does not disclose how much is in here.

What matters most is what is missing. No retinoid, no acid, so purging is not possible. A breakout here is irritation — stop, do not push through.
