AmLactin Daily Nourish is the body lotion I recommend for keratosis pilaris and rough, dry limbs. Its 12% ammonium lactate pulls water in and loosens the glue holding dead cells on, so the bumps flatten. Wear sunscreen, because it makes you burn more easily. Too strong for the face.

Good fitAmmonium lactate is a humectant as well as an acid, so it pulls water into the outer layer while it thins the rough surface.
That is why it works on very dry shins when a plain lotion has done nothing.
Keratosis Pilaris
Okay fitKeratosis pilaris is a plug of keratin — the protein skin cells are made of — in the opening of a hair follicle. That is why the bumps feel like sandpaper and why scrubbing does not shift them.
Ammonium lactate loosens the bonds holding the plugs together so they shed, and the bumps come back within weeks of stopping.
Acne
Poor fitAmmonium lactate is an AHA, so it gets tried on chest and back breakouts. At body-lotion strength it is not an acne treatment, and the base is heavier than acne-prone skin wants.
Eczema
Poor fitIt looks right for dry, itchy skin, but lactic acid burns on a cracked barrier. Settle the flare with a plain cream first.
Sensitive Skin
Poor fitAn acid at 12 percent stings on anything cracked, broken or freshly shaved, and AmLactin says to keep it off open skin. For the same coverage without acid, use Vanicream Moisturizing Cream.

A thin, standard lotion. It pumps out easily and spreads a long way.
It sinks in within a minute and leaves almost no residue, so clothes go straight back on. There is a faint sour smell from the lactic acid, which most people stop noticing. It stings for a few seconds anywhere skin is cracked or freshly shaved, sharper than people expect from a body lotion.

One fact makes the price look strange: at 12 percent this is the same molecule at the same strength as Lac-Hydrin, which needs a prescription. It cuts both ways, though — Lac-Hydrin was reviewed by the FDA for whether it works, and AmLactin, sold as a cosmetic, was not.

A thin layer over the area. More does not work faster.
Careful
Alpha hydroxy acids make skin burn more easily, and the label warning covers the week after you stop, so wear sunscreen or keep the skin covered. Not on broken or freshly shaved skin.
What to expect
Smoother in about two weeks, better by four to six. This manages keratosis pilaris; nothing cures it. The bumps return within a few weeks of stopping, so you keep using it.
