Dermatologist's Verdict

This is UV Clear's formula in a richer base — the same zinc oxide and octinoxate, but petrolatum and hyaluronic acid underneath, so it hydrates and finishes dewy. On dry or mature skin it can replace your morning moisturizer. Do not read anything into SPF 40 against 46. If you are oily or acne-prone, take UV Clear.

The short versionWhat It Is

EltaMD UV Daily is a broad-spectrum SPF 40 facial sunscreen in a light but dewy lotion, sold in dermatology offices and online for around $37 to $45. It is a daily-wear sunscreen for normal to dry skin, not a water-resistant or sport formula.

The filters are zinc oxide at 9 percent, a mineral that sits on the surface, and octinoxate at 7.5 percent, a chemical filter. The base is what separates this from EltaMD UV Clear: petrolatum and dimethicone to seal water in, plus sodium hyaluronate to hold water at the surface. That is why it finishes dewy instead of matte.

Where it earns its keepWhat It Treats

Sun Damage (Photoaging)
Sun Damage (Photoaging)
Works well
Most sun damage arrives in small daily doses rather than on holidays, so the sunscreen that matters is the one you wear on an ordinary Tuesday. This is comfortable enough for that, and SPF 40 is well above the SPF 30 minimum.
Melasma
Melasma
Works some
Daily broad-spectrum cover is the foundation of any melasma plan, because ultraviolet light switches pigment cells back on. This version is untinted, so it does not screen visible light, which also drives melasma. A Deep Tinted version of UV Daily exists, and iron oxides are what you want.
Dry Skin (Xerosis)
Dry Skin (Xerosis)
Good fit
Dry skin loses water through the surface faster than it can replace it, so it needs something sealing on top. Most sunscreens are built to feel light and do the opposite. This one puts petrolatum and dimethicone in the base, so it can stand in for your morning moisturizer.

Oily Skin
Oily Skin
Poor fit
This is made to look dewy. Oily skin reads that as shine within a few hours.

How it feelsTexture

A light lotion that spreads easily and finishes dewy rather than matte.

On dry skin it feels like a moisturizer with sunscreen in it, which is what it is meant to be. On oily skin the same finish reads as shiny within a few hours, and EltaMD UV Clear is the version built for that.

There is a slight white cast, as with any sunscreen carrying 9 percent zinc oxide. This one is untinted, so the cast shows more on deeper skin. A Deep Tinted version is sold if that matters.

The house rulesHow to Use EltaMD UV Daily

How much: About a quarter teaspoon for the face alone. SPF 40 is measured at a thickness most people never apply, and half as much does not give you half the protection — it gives you considerably less.
Where: Face, ears, neck and hairline. The eyelids and the front of the ears are missed most.
Reapply: Every two hours outdoors, and after sweating, swimming or towel drying. This is not water-resistant.
What to expect: Protection is immediate and there is nothing to build toward. If it looks shiny by midday, that is the base doing its job for dry skin, and it is why UV Clear exists.

How Skin Makes Pigment

Color is not made by your skin cells. It is made by a separate kind of cell that sits underneath them, the melanocyte — roughly one for every ten skin cells — with long arms reaching up between its neighbors. Everyone has about the same number of them. Skin tone is a question of how busy they are, not how many there are.

The work happens in four steps. Something switches the cell on: usually ultraviolet light, sometimes visible light, sometimes the inflammation left by a spot. Inside the cell an enzyme called tyrosinase builds the pigment. The finished pigment is packed into parcels and handed up those arms into the surrounding skin cells. Then it rides those cells to the surface and sheds.

That is why a dark mark is slow to fade and quick to come back. What you can see is pigment already delivered and waiting to shed, while the cell that made it is still getting the same message. Every ingredient below interrupts one of the four steps, and none of them interrupts the light.

What's insideEltaMD UV Daily: What It Does in the Skin

Sunscreen filters do one of two things. Mineral filters such as zinc oxide sit on the surface and block ultraviolet light. Chemical filters such as octinoxate absorb that energy and release it as heat. Zinc oxide covers a wide span including UVA, the longer wavelengths that reach deeper and drive most collagen loss, while octinoxate covers UVB, which burns.

EltaMD UV Daily and EltaMD UV Clear use the same two filters at the same strengths. The difference is the base. UV Clear is oil-free and matte. UV Daily adds petrolatum, dimethicone and hyaluronic acid, so it seals, hydrates and finishes dewy. That decides who each suits: oily and acne-prone skin takes UV Clear, dry and mature skin takes UV Daily.

The SPF is 40 here against 46 in UV Clear. That gap is not clinically meaningful. Both sit well past the SPF 30 floor, and how much you apply matters far more.

Sunscreen works before anything else does: it stops the light that switches pigment cells on and damages DNA from reaching them. Nothing that fades a mark can outrun light still landing on it every day. A mineral filter. It sits on the surface and covers UVA and UVB.

Zinc oxide sits on the skin as a mineral particle and does not cross the barrier. Staying on top is the requirement, not a limitation — it has to be between the light and the skin.

The outer film of dead cells and oil. It holds water in and keeps irritants out, and it is thinner than a sheet of paper. Almost every dry, itchy, stinging skin problem starts here.

The outer layer, and the only one anything in a jar reaches. It renews itself constantly: a cell made at the bottom takes about a month to reach the surface and flake off. Most of what a skincare product does, it does here.

The living layer underneath, holding the blood vessels, the nerves and the collagen. It is where lasting change happens and it is hard to reach: most of what is sold for the skin never gets this far.

The strongest seal there is. Water underneath it stays put.

A thin film that slows water leaving the skin.

The outermost layer, and the one every moisturizer is aiming at. It is dead — flattened cells stacked like bricks, with a mix of fats as the glue between them. That glue is what holds water in and keeps irritants out.

This is how many ingredients are on the label. The more a product contains, the more chances one of them bothers you. That matters most if you have sensitive skin, eczema, or a known allergy. If your skin tolerates most things, a long list is not a problem by itself.

The fine printA Dermatologist’s Concerns

May feel too rich on oily skin: the dewy finish reads as shiny by midday if you run oily. That is what UV Clear is for.

May concern acne-prone skin: it contains petrolatum, so it is not oil-free. Fine for most people, worth knowing if you are acne-prone.

May leave a white cast: same white cast and octinoxate notes as UV Clear. There is a Deep Tinted version of UV Daily if you need it.

What it runsPrice per Ounce

EltaMD UV Daily costs $24 per ounce. That is cheaper than 10 of the other 19 sunscreens priced on Dermapedia, which run from $6.33 to $233 per ounce.

You need about a quarter teaspoon on the face every morning, and more again if you reapply. Sunscreen is used up far faster than a moisturizer of the same size, so the per-ounce price understates what daily use actually costs.
