Which one is right for you?

Choose Dimethicone if…

Choose for a smooth protective moisturizer or barrier cream.

  • You want a smooth, non-greasy barrier
  • Dry or chafed skin
  • Diaper or friction areas

Choose Glycerin if…

Choose for everyday hydration in a moisturizer that feels comfortable.

  • Everyday hydration
  • Dry or tight skin
  • A simple, fragrance-free routine
Often combined

Can you use both?

A classic moisturizer pairing: glycerin draws in water and dimethicone seals it in.

Dry Skin

Controlled testing supports increased outer-skin hydration.

Barrier Support

Supports a moisturizing formula; petrolatum contributed more directly to reduced water loss.

Eczema

Useful moisturizing support; glycerin alone is not a treatment for an inflamed eczema flare.

Strengths and forms

Concentrations

U.S. skin-protectant products use 1–30% dimethicone. Cosmetic moisturizers and specialized lice treatments serve different purposes and should not be placed on one effectiveness ladder.

3%

1–30%

Studied barrier-care formula

A particular cleansing/barrier washcloth was studied for incontinence-associated dermatitis; it is not a universal ideal percentage.

U.S. skin-protectant range

Used in qualifying skin-protectant products. Choose the labeled purpose and texture, not the upper limit.

Choosing a strength: Look for a finished moisturizer or barrier product intended for the area you are treating.

Higher strengths: A very concentrated product is not automatically better for facial skin. Lice-treatment formulations are not substitutes for moisturizers.

Formula matters: Dimethicone’s viscosity and combination with other ingredients change its feel and function. The name alone does not describe the complete silicone blend.

Glycerin works as part of a moisturizer’s complete formula. The U.S. skin-protectant drug range is 20–45%, but this is not a minimum needed for a cosmetic moisturizer to hydrate skin.

20–45%

U.S. skin-protectant drug range

A labeling category for qualifying drug products, not a target range for every face cream or serum.

Choosing a strength: Choose a moisturizer that feels comfortable and combines water-binding ingredients with suitable oils or occlusives.

Higher strengths: A higher glycerin percentage is not automatically a better moisturizer; texture, tackiness and the rest of the formula matter.

Formula matters: Glycerin and petrolatum can complement each other. A glycerin percentage alone does not describe how well the whole cream reduces dryness.

Common reactions

When to stop

Stop for persistent burning, swelling, blistering or a new rash. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty or a severe allergic reaction.

Important limits

Do not use a cosmetic product as a substitute for diagnosis of an unexplained, changing or persistent skin problem.

Pregnancy

It is not absorbed through the skin, which is why people ask. Even so, run anything you use past the doctor managing your pregnancy.

How it works

In the skin

On the skin. The finished product delivers dimethicone in a particular vehicle.

Entering skin. No single molecular mass. Polymer size and formulation affect delivery; hydration can occur at the surface.

Conversion. No activation step is established as necessary for its intended topical role.

Skin response. Spreads over the skin as a silicone film; its protective action is mainly at the surface.

Additional effects. Proposed pathways do not establish a measured depth of delivery or clinical benefit beyond the studies cited.

On the skin. The finished product delivers glycerin in a particular vehicle.

Entering skin. Below the 500 Da guideline; delivery still depends on the formula, solubility, stability and skin condition. Size does not prove effectiveness or penetration depth.

Skin response. Binds water in the stratum corneum; emollients and occlusives in the same formula help retain it.

Product examples

Dimethicone
  • Neutrogena Hydro Boost — The famous hyaluronic acid gel, in which hyaluronic acid is 15th of 20 ingredients and silicone is second.
  • First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Rescue Barrier Balm With Dimethicone
  • CeraVe Reparative Hand Cream
Glycerin
  • CeraVe Diabetics' Dry Skin Relief — Sold on urea. It contains none — and no petrolatum, which makes it arguably weaker than the $12 CeraVe tub beside it.

Common questions

Dimethicone:What should I choose dimethicone for?

Choose for a smooth protective moisturizer or barrier cream.

Dimethicone:How strong is the evidence?

A randomized nursing-home trial tested an entire 3-in-1 cleansing regimen with 3% dimethicone, not isolated dimethicone. Lice treatments use specialized formulas and must not be replaced by moisturizer.

Glycerin:What should I choose glycerin for?

Choose for everyday hydration in a moisturizer that feels comfortable.

Glycerin:How strong is the evidence?

A 51-person crossover study separated glycerol, petrolatum and vehicle effects over 12 hours. Hydration measurements do not prove treatment of acne or pigmentation.
