Top things to know about Mineral Fusion Brush-On Sun Defense

  1. Mineral Fusion Brush-On Sun Defense is an SPF 30 sunscreen powder in a 0.14 oz compact with a brush in the lid, for about $30. It is a top-up, not the sunscreen you start the day with, and the faint tint is there to keep it invisible.
  2. The only filter is zinc oxide at 24 percent, a heavy load for a powder, carried in mica, silica and boron nitride, which give slip and soak up oil, with iron oxides for color. That is why it mattifies as much as it protects, and goes over makeup without disturbing it.
Mixed

Mineral Fusion Brush-On Sun Defense is a reapplication tool, not the sun protection you start the day with. It carries 24% zinc oxide, but people apply roughly a tenth of the thickness the SPF was tested at. Put a proper sunscreen on in the morning and dust this over makeup at lunchtime.

Skin fit

Is it right for your skin?

Good fit

Oily Skin

The silica and mica absorb oil, so a midday reapplication takes the shine down instead of adding to it. That is why people who give up on reapplying a lotion stick with this.

Sun Damage

UV damage adds up across a day, and the sunscreen you put on at eight is largely gone by mid-afternoon. Something applied at lunchtime is worth more than a better product you will not reapply. Start with a proper lotion, though — a powder alone never reaches its labeled SPF.

Melasma

Melasma is set off by visible light as well as UV, and the iron oxides here block some of it. Reapplying matters more in melasma than almost anywhere else.

Powder

Mineral Fusion Brush-On Sun Defense is a fine, faintly tinted powder that comes through the brush head, without the chalkiness some SPF powders have. It goes on dry and sits matte, and over makeup it does not lift or streak what is underneath. The compact is tiny at 0.14 oz and the brush needs twisting to load, so building an even layer takes longer than it looks.

  2. ReapplyEvery two hours outdoors, and after sweating. Over makeup that is far easier than a lotion.
  3. CarefulThe brand's own instruction to apply liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure reads as though the powder can be your only protection. It cannot.
