Top things to know about Cortizone-10 Maximum Strength Anti-Itch Creme
- Cortizone-10 Maximum Strength Anti-Itch Creme is hydrocortisone 1% in a plain white cream, about $7 to $9 at any drugstore. It is a regulated drug, not skincare, for short-term itch from bug bites, eczema patches and irritant rashes. "Maximum Strength" means 1% is the most allowed without a prescription, not that it beats a store brand.
- Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid, a copy of a hormone your adrenal glands make, and the weakest class there is. The base is petrolatum, mineral oil and cetearyl alcohol, with aloe and — oddly for inflamed skin — sodium lauryl sulfate, a known irritant.
A real steroid that works for short-term itch — bites, eczema patches, irritant rashes. Hydrocortisone 1% is the weakest class there is. Stop after a week on the face, eyelids, groin or armpits, where daily use thins skin permanently. Never use it on a ring-shaped or spreading rash. That is likely fungal.

Skin fit
Is it right for your skin?
Eczema
An eczema flare is inflammation: immune cells release signals that cause redness, swelling and itch. Hydrocortisone turns those signals down at the source, which is why it stops an itch a moisturizer cannot touch. Use it for a few days. Moisturizer keeps the next flare away.
Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis is an immune reaction to something the skin touched, and it runs for days after the trigger is gone. A steroid shortens that. It does not remove the trigger, so work out what it was or the rash comes back.
Hand Dermatitis
Hands are one of the safer places for a steroid because the skin is thick. Thinning happens far more readily on thin skin: face, eyelids, groin, armpits. The seven-day limit still applies.

Cream
A standard white cream that rubs in fast. It does not sting, even on skin scratched open, and it is fragrance-free. The base contains sodium lauryl sulfate, a known irritant and an odd choice for inflamed skin, though most people will not notice it.
Alternatives

MG217 Psoriasis Ointment
If the rash is plaque psoriasis, coal tar 2% treats the disease and has no seven-day limit. It is greasy and raises sun sensitivity for a day.
Vaseline
Plain jelly soothes a dry, irritated patch with no steroid and no time limit. No drug in it, so a strong itch still needs hydrocortisone.
Gold Bond Psoriasis Relief
Salicylic acid 3% loosens thick psoriasis scale. It does nothing for the itch of a bite or an irritant rash, which is this cream's job.

A fatty alcohol that softens skin and thickens the product. Despite the name, it is not drying.
A small humectant. It moves into the outer layer of skin and holds water there.
Forms a thin film on top of the skin that slows water loss while the barrier recovers.
The base the other ingredients are dissolved in. Most of it evaporates soon after the product goes on.
How to use it
How to use it.
How to apply it
- How muchA thin layer over the itchy patch. Piling it on does nothing.
- CarefulBe sparing on the face, eyelids, groin and armpits. Thin skin absorbs far more, and that is where steroid thinning, broken veins and permanent stretch marks happen.
What to pair it with
- Watch outNot on a fungal rash. If the patch is ring-shaped, scaly, spreading at the edges, or improves and then worsens on this cream, stop and see a doctor. That rash needs an antifungal.
What to expect
- What to expectItch eases within hours, redness over two or three days. If you still need it after a week, get a diagnosis rather than more steroid.
