Clear + Brilliant

Clear + Brilliant is a light fractional laser. The handpiece is passed over numbed skin several times.
Clear + Brilliant is a gentle fractional laser. It is aimed at dullness, early lines and uneven tone, and most people use it as upkeep a few times a year. Microneedling is the stronger of the two for texture. It has the better evidence for acne scars and rough skin, and it uses no light, so it is the safer choice on deeper skin tones. Neither one erases a deep scar, and nobody has compared them in a proper trial.

A microneedling pen makes tiny channels in the skin. Needle depth is set for the area being treated.

Clear + Brilliant
Light, in thousands of tiny columns
The laser heats microscopic columns of skin and leaves the skin between them untouched. That is why healing is quick.
Microneedling
Steel needles, 0.5 to 2.5 mm
The needles puncture past the epidermis into the dermis, the layer where collagen is made. Healing those small wounds is what builds new collagen.
Clear + Brilliant
Glow, early lines, uneven tone
Dullness, a rough surface, mild sun damage and the first fine lines. It is a maintenance treatment.
Microneedling
Acne scars and rough texture
Rolling and boxcar acne scars, open pores and general roughness. This is where the published evidence sits.

A gentle fractional laser, sometimes called a baby Fraxel, with a day or two of redness. It gives a real but small improvement in fine lines and glow and needs a series to show anything. It is a maintenance treatment rather than a way to change established wrinkles.

Narrow and deep, like a puncture. A needle passing over the surface cannot reach the bottom of the tract. These need TCA CROSS, punch excision, or a laser.

Fine needles make controlled micro-injuries that prompt new collagen in the scarred layer. Improvement is modest and needs a course of sessions, but it carries a lower risk of leaving dark marks than lasers do, which makes it the more sensible first device on deeper skin tones. It works on both red and white marks.

Fine needles injure the skin just enough to trigger new collagen. It does most for rolling and shallow boxcar scars, and very little for icepick ones. It is the gentlest of the resurfacing options, which also makes it the slowest — expect four to six sessions and judge it at a year, not at a month.

Fine needles rolled or stamped into the scalp, used alongside minoxidil rather than instead of it. The small trials that exist favor the combination over minoxidil alone. Sessions are spaced weeks apart, and doing it too often or too deeply irritates the scalp without adding anything.

Fine needles make controlled injuries that prompt the skin to lay down collagen. Improvement in fine lines and texture is modest and builds over three to six sessions. Its advantage here is a lower risk of pigment problems on deeper skin tones than lasers or deep peels carry, which makes it a common first choice.

Fine needles make controlled channels that help topical treatments penetrate and encourage the skin to remodel. It is mainly a scarring treatment, and its effect on pigment alone is small. It is a reasonable choice when true scars and dark marks sit together, but it can inflame reactive skin, so conservative depths are used on deeper skin tones.

Fine needles make temporary channels that help tranexamic acid or other treatments reach deeper, and that combination is where the evidence sits — not needling on its own. It has to be done gently. Aggressive needling inflames the skin, and inflamed skin with active pigment cells makes more pigment, not less.

Thickens the skin slightly over a course of sessions, which can make the vessels underneath a little less visible. The evidence around the eye is thin and the change is subtle. It will not fill a hollow, and on deeper skin tones it carries its own risk of leaving marks, so it is not a first choice here.

Clear + Brilliant
Brighter skin in about a week
Skin feels like fine sandpaper for a day or two, then sheds a very thin layer. The glow arrives as that clears.
Microneedling
Smoother texture, shallower indents
Change builds over months as new collagen forms. Deep, narrow icepick scars improve least.
Clear + Brilliant
It will not fix a real scar
The energy is set low on purpose. It softens the surface. A deep acne scar needs something that reaches further down.
Microneedling
It will not fix colour
Needling works on texture. Brown spots, flushing and broken vessels need a light-based treatment instead.

Strong evidence. Fraxel and other stronger nonablative fractional lasers are the same idea at much higher energy. They do considerably more per session for scars, texture, and lines, at the cost of about a week of downtime, more money per session, and more pigment risk.

Moderate evidence. Reaches deeper than this treatment for texture and indented scars, with no light or heat, so pigment risk is low. Generally cheaper, and less pleasant during the procedure.

Strong evidence, and the most effective single option for indented acne scars. In exchange it brings a week of real downtime, higher cost, and a genuine risk of lasting pigment change, especially on deeper skin tones.

Moderate evidence. Adds heat at depth, which does more for laxity and can do more for scars, at the cost of more discomfort, more downtime, and a higher price. Still safer on deeper skin tones than ablative lasers.

Strong evidence for one specific job. It cuts the fibrous bands tethering rolling scars downward, which needling cannot reach. Often done alongside microneedling rather than instead of it.

Strong evidence for pores and brown marks, none for indented scars. Superficial peels work on the surface and cannot lift a scar floor.

About a week per session
Most plans run four to six sessions, two to four weeks apart.
Microneedling
Four to six weeks per session
A course is three to six sessions, about a month apart.
Clear + Brilliant
A few months
Microneedling
Several months to a year
Clear + Brilliant
Warm prickling, about 20 minutes
Numbing cream first. Most people describe heat and a rubber-band snap rather than pain.
Microneedling
Scratching and pressure
Numbing cream first as well. The forehead and the jawline are the tender spots.
Clear + Brilliant
One to three days of pink, rough skin
Make-up is usually fine the next day.
Microneedling
A few days looking sunburnt
Redness for one to three days, then light flaking.
Clear + Brilliant
It is light, so tone matters
This is one of the gentler lasers and is used across a wide range of skin tones. Any laser still carries some risk of a patch going darker or lighter.
Microneedling
No light is involved
Needling has no pigment target at all. That is why it is often the first choice for deeper skin tones.

There isn't one
No home device makes fractional laser columns. Home "laser" wands emit low-level light at a tiny fraction of the power and work by a different mechanism entirely.
Microneedling
A home roller is a different thing
Home rollers use short, blunt needles that dull quickly and are hard to keep clean. They pierce enough to inflame skin, not enough to remodel it. A reused roller is the most common way people pick up an infection from needling.

Microneedling
Clear + Brilliant
Clear + Brilliant is a prevention treatment. People book it because they like how their skin looks and want to keep it that way. The change per session is small and pleasant.
Microneedling
Microneedling is a correction treatment. People book it because something is already there: acne scars, rough cheeks, pores that have not budged. The change per session is larger, and so is the recovery.
Clear + Brilliant
Clear + Brilliant works mostly at the top. Its columns are shallow and its energy is deliberately modest. That buys you a quick recovery and costs you depth.
Microneedling
Microneedling reaches into the dermis. That is why it can lift the floor of a shallow scar, and also why it leaves you red for a few days.
Microneedling
Microneedling has years of published work, most of it on acne scars, where it clearly improves shallow rolling and boxcar scars. Clear + Brilliant has much less published work, and what exists looks at tone and early ageing rather than scars. No trial has put the two against each other.
