VI Peel

A VI peel leaves a yellow tint on the skin while it works. Peeling usually starts a few days later.
The VI Peel is a medium-depth chemical peel. It works mainly on colour: uneven tone, pigment and mild roughness, by making the top layers shed. Microneedling goes deeper and works on shape. It has the better evidence for acne scars and rough texture. Peel for colour, needling for indents, and plenty of people end up having both.
| The difference | VI Peel | Microneedling |
|---|---|---|
| What is done to you | A solution is painted on and left | Needles are passed across the skin |
| What it is best at | Tone, pigment and mild texture | Acne scars and rough texture |
| How long until it works | About a week per peel | Four to six weeks per session |
| What it feels like | Stinging and heat for a few minutes | Scratching and pressure |
| Downtime | About five days of visible peeling | A few days looking sunburnt |

A microneedling pen makes tiny channels in the skin. Needle depth is set for the area being treated.
Side by side
VI Peel
A solution is painted on and left
A blend of acids is applied in layers and stays on for hours. It makes the upper layers of skin lift and shed.
Microneedling
Needles are passed across the skin
Steel needles 0.5 to 2.5 mm long puncture past the epidermis into the dermis, the layer where collagen is made. Healing those wounds builds new collagen.
VI Peel
Tone, pigment and mild texture
Sun damage, patchy colour, marks left after acne, and a dull or rough surface.
Microneedling
Acne scars and rough texture
Rolling and boxcar acne scars, open pores and general roughness. This is where the published evidence sits.

Narrow and deep, like a puncture. A needle passing over the surface cannot reach the bottom of the tract. These need TCA CROSS, punch excision, or a laser.

Fine needles make controlled micro-injuries that prompt new collagen in the scarred layer. Improvement is modest and needs a course of sessions, but it carries a lower risk of leaving dark marks than lasers do, which makes it the more sensible first device on deeper skin tones. It works on both red and white marks.

Fine needles injure the skin just enough to trigger new collagen. It does most for rolling and shallow boxcar scars, and very little for icepick ones. It is the gentlest of the resurfacing options, which also makes it the slowest — expect four to six sessions and judge it at a year, not at a month.

Fine needles rolled or stamped into the scalp, used alongside minoxidil rather than instead of it. The small trials that exist favor the combination over minoxidil alone. Sessions are spaced weeks apart, and doing it too often or too deeply irritates the scalp without adding anything.

Fine needles make controlled injuries that prompt the skin to lay down collagen. Improvement in fine lines and texture is modest and builds over three to six sessions. Its advantage here is a lower risk of pigment problems on deeper skin tones than lasers or deep peels carry, which makes it a common first choice.

Fine needles make controlled channels that help topical treatments penetrate and encourage the skin to remodel. It is mainly a scarring treatment, and its effect on pigment alone is small. It is a reasonable choice when true scars and dark marks sit together, but it can inflame reactive skin, so conservative depths are used on deeper skin tones.

Fine needles make temporary channels that help tranexamic acid or other treatments reach deeper, and that combination is where the evidence sits — not needling on its own. It has to be done gently. Aggressive needling inflames the skin, and inflamed skin with active pigment cells makes more pigment, not less.

Thickens the skin slightly over a course of sessions, which can make the vessels underneath a little less visible. The evidence around the eye is thin and the change is subtle. It will not fill a hollow, and on deeper skin tones it carries its own risk of leaving marks, so it is not a first choice here.

VI Peel
It will not lift a deep scar
Shedding layers evens out colour and the very top of the surface. An indent you can feel usually stays.
Microneedling
It will not even out colour
Needling works on shape, not on colour. Brown patches and sun spots need a peel or a light-based treatment.

Strong evidence, and the most effective single option for indented acne scars. In exchange it brings a week of real downtime, higher cost, and a genuine risk of lasting pigment change, especially on deeper skin tones.

Moderate evidence. Adds heat at depth, which does more for laxity and can do more for scars, at the cost of more discomfort, more downtime, and a higher price. Still safer on deeper skin tones than ablative lasers.

Strong evidence for one specific job. It cuts the fibrous bands tethering rolling scars downward, which needling cannot reach. Often done alongside microneedling rather than instead of it.

Strong evidence for pores and brown marks, none for indented scars. Superficial peels work on the surface and cannot lift a scar floor.
VI Peel
Peeling, then brighter skin
Flaking starts around day two or three and runs about five days. The even tone shows once it finishes.
Microneedling
Smoother texture, shallower indents
Change builds over months as new collagen forms. Deep, narrow icepick scars improve least.
VI Peel
About a week per peel
The usual plan is three peels, four to six weeks apart.
Microneedling
Four to six weeks per session
A course is three to six sessions, about a month apart.
VI Peel
Months, and sun ends it
New pigment arrives every summer, so most people repeat a few times a year.
Microneedling
Several months to a year
New collagen stays, but skin keeps ageing.
VI Peel
Stinging and heat for a few minutes
The solution tingles as it goes on. The skin then tightens over the next day.
Microneedling
Scratching and pressure
Numbing cream first. The forehead and the jawline are the tender spots.
VI Peel
About five days of visible peeling
Flaking rather than sheets. Make-up sits badly on it, and picking at it causes marks.
Microneedling
A few days looking sunburnt
Redness for one to three days, then light flaking.
VI Peel
Usable, with care
Peels are used across skin tones, but any peel can leave a darker patch behind on deeper skin. Strength and aftercare matter.
Microneedling
No light is involved
Needling has no pigment target at all. That is why it is often the first choice for deeper skin tones.
VI Peel
Priced per peel, sold in threes
Ask what a series of three costs.
Microneedling
Priced per session, also a course
Ask for the price of the whole course.
VI Peel
A weaker relative, not the same peel
Home acid pads and masks use lower strengths and short contact times. They exfoliate the very top layer. They do not reach the depth a clinic peel works at.
Microneedling
A home roller is a different thing
Home rollers use short, blunt needles that dull quickly and are hard to keep clean. They pierce enough to inflame skin, not enough to remodel it. A reused roller is the most common way people pick up an infection from needling.
VI Peel
Microneedling
Microneedling
Microneedling has years of published work on acne scars, where it clearly improves shallow rolling and boxcar scars. Chemical peels have a long record for pigment and uneven tone. No trial has put the two against each other, and neither record answers for the other treatment.
