Moxi Laser vs Bbl

Moxi is a fractional laser, and it works on texture and tone. It heats thousands of microscopic columns in the skin, and the skin repairs them over about a week. BBL is broadband light, a brand of IPL, and it works on colour. Brown spots and broken capillaries are what it fades, which is why many clinics sell the two together in one visit.

Moxi Laser

Clinician holding a Moxi laser handpiece against a person's cheek.

Moxi is a gentle fractional laser. It is often chosen for younger skin or before summer.

BBL (Broadband Light)

BBL sends broad-spectrum light into the skin. A layer of gel sits under the handpiece.

The differences that matter

What touches your skin

Moxi Laser

Laser light, in tiny columns

One wavelength, delivered in a grid of microscopic hot spots. The skin between the spots is left untouched, which is what makes healing fast.

BBL (Broadband Light)

A broad flash of many wavelengths

A wide pulse of light across the whole treated patch. A filter picks which colours in the skin absorb it.

What it aims at

Moxi Laser

Water in the skin

Moxi is absorbed by water, not by pigment. That is why it works on skin quality rather than on one spot.

BBL (Broadband Light)

Pigment and blood

The light is soaked up by brown pigment and by the red in a vessel. Those two targets heat up and break down.

What it is best at

Moxi Laser

Texture, tone and dullness

Rough skin, patchy colour, early sun damage and marks left after spots.

BBL (Broadband Light)

Brown spots and redness

Sun spots, freckling, broken capillaries and the flushed look of rosacea.

What it will not do

Moxi Laser

It will not clear a broken capillary

Moxi is not a vascular treatment. Visible red vessels need light that targets blood.

BBL (Broadband Light)

It will not smooth rough skin

BBL works on colour, not on surface texture. Any collagen change from repeat sessions is modest.

What you will see afterwards

Moxi Laser

Speckling, then flaking

Tiny dark flecks rise to the surface over a day or two, and the skin feels like fine sandpaper before they shed.

BBL (Broadband Light)

Spots darken, then flake off

Treated brown spots go coffee-coloured for about a week, then lift away. Redness fades more slowly.

How long until it works

Moxi Laser

About a week per session

Most plans are three to four sessions, four to six weeks apart.

BBL (Broadband Light)

One to two weeks per session

Usually three to five sessions, on similar spacing. Many people see a change after the first one.

How long it lasts

Moxi Laser

Months, then a top-up

What it feels like

Moxi Laser

Prickly heat, about ten minutes

Numbing cream first. A full face is quick.

BBL (Broadband Light)

Like a rubber band snap

Bright, hot flashes with eye shields on. The handpiece has a chilled plate held against the skin.

Downtime

Moxi Laser

Three to five days of speckled skin

Pink on day one, then rough and flecked. Make-up sits badly on it.

BBL (Broadband Light)

A day or two of pink skin

Dark flecks stay visible for about a week, but the skin itself settles fast.

Skin tone

Moxi Laser

Aims at water, so a wider tone range

Because it does not seek out pigment, Moxi is used across more skin tones than most lasers. It is still light, so some risk remains.

BBL (Broadband Light)

Aims at pigment, so tone matters

Light cannot tell a sun spot from naturally rich skin. Deeper tones carry more risk of a burn or a patch of changed colour.

Cost

Moxi Laser

Priced per session, sold as a course

Ask what three or four sessions cost, not one.

BBL (Broadband Light)

Priced per session, sold as a course

Often quoted at a premium over generic IPL. Ask for the price of the full course.

The at-home or drugstore version

Moxi Laser

There isn't one

No home device makes fractional laser columns. Home "laser" wands run at a small fraction of the power and never reach the depth Moxi works at.

BBL (Broadband Light)

A much weaker version of the same thing

Home IPL handsets are real IPL. They put a fraction of the energy into the skin, are sold mainly for hair rather than facial pigment, and need many more sessions for a partial result.

Texture or colour is the whole decision

Moxi Laser

Pick Moxi if what bothers you is how the skin looks overall. Dull, uneven, a bit rough, generally tired. Moxi resurfaces a fraction of the surface at a time and lets the rest heal it.

Skin tone changes the answer

Moxi Laser

Moxi carries less of that particular risk. It aims at water, so a deeper skin tone is not itself a target. It is still a laser, and any laser can leave a patch healing darker in skin that pigments easily.

Nobody has compared them head to head

Moxi Laser

No trial has put Moxi against BBL. They are usually studied for different things, so there is little reason to run one. What we know is what each does in its own right: fractional resurfacing improves texture and tone, and broad-spectrum light clears pigment and vessels.

Common questions

Questions Patients Ask

Is Moxi or BBL better for brown spots?

BBL. Its light is absorbed by pigment, so it lifts sun spots and freckling faster and more completely. Moxi improves patchy colour too, but it is doing it as part of resurfacing the whole surface.

Can you have Moxi and BBL on the same day?

Yes, and many clinics do exactly that. BBL is usually run first to clear pigment and vessels, then Moxi resurfaces. Expect the downtime of the stronger of the two, not the gentler one.

Which one is safer for darker skin?

Moxi, generally. It targets water rather than pigment, so a deeper skin tone is not itself a target for the light. BBL aims at pigment and carries a higher risk of burns or patchy colour on deeper tones.

How many sessions of each do you need?

Moxi is usually three to four sessions, four to six weeks apart. BBL is usually three to five, on similar spacing. Both need a top-up once or twice a year, mostly because of new sun damage.

Does BBL help with wrinkles?

Not meaningfully. BBL works on colour. Repeated sessions produce some collagen change, but fine lines and rough texture are a resurfacing job, which is what Moxi does.

Is BBL the same as IPL?

Yes. BBL is intense pulsed light sold under Sciton's own brand name. The technology is the same category, though newer devices cool the skin better and hold their energy output steadier than older units.
