Morpheus8 vs CoolSculpting

Morpheus8 treats the skin. CoolSculpting removes fat. Morpheus8 drives radiofrequency heat into the skin through fine needles, to remodel collagen. CoolSculpting freezes a pocket of fat and does nothing to the skin. They are not alternatives: if what you can hold between your fingers is a soft pad of fat, that is CoolSculpting's problem, and if the skin itself is loose or crepey, that is Morpheus8's.

Morpheus8

Close-up of a purple handpiece tip holding a square array of thin gold needles, held just above a woman's forehead.

The Morpheus8 tip up close. The gold pins are what carry the radiofrequency energy below the surface — the needles are the delivery route, not the treatment itself.

CoolSculpting

A large white applicator cup is clamped onto the side of a person's abdomen, held in place by a gloved practitioner.

The applicator draws a fold of skin and fat up into the cup and holds it there while it chills. That suction is why the area feels tugged for the first few minutes.

11 comparison points

What you actually do

Morpheus8

Needles that carry heat into the skin

The pins are insulated except for the last 0.5 millimetre. Energy comes off the tip, so the surface of the skin is largely spared.

CoolSculpting

A cooling cup placed on the skin

A fold of tissue is held inside the applicator and chilled from the outside.

How it works

Morpheus8

Heat inside the skin, to remodel collagen

Each pass leaves narrow columns of heat damage, with untreated skin in between. Collagen contracts and rebuilds over months.

CoolSculpting

Cold from outside, to kill fat cells

Over roughly 8 to 12 weeks the body clears the dead fat cells. Nothing at all is done to the skin.

How deep it goes

Morpheus8

The operator chooses the depth

Depth is set on the handpiece, from 0.5 mm for surface work up to 7 mm on the body tip. The 8 mm figure used in marketing is 7 mm of needle plus a 1 mm heat zone.

CoolSculpting

As deep as the cold reaches

That is the fold of tissue held inside the applicator.

What you can expect to see

Morpheus8

Texture, acne scarring, mild tightening

The best-evidenced use of this kind of device is atrophic acne scars, the sunken, pitted kind.

CoolSculpting

A smaller pocket of fat

The fat layer thins over roughly 8 to 12 weeks.

What it will not do

Morpheus8

It does not reduce fat

One study scanned under the chin in 30 people. The skin got thicker. The fat layer did not change.

CoolSculpting

It does not treat the skin

Freezing fat will not help loose or crepey skin. It can even look worse, because taking fat out from under slack skin does not shrink the skin.

The downside

Morpheus8

Redness in almost everyone, 3 to 4 days

Swelling happens in about a third of people. The skin barrier is weakest on days one to three and back to normal by day seven.

CoolSculpting

Numb, red and firm for days to weeks

There is not much to see. Pain, or nerve-type pain that arrives a few days later, is common in the first one to two weeks.

How many sessions

Morpheus8

1 to 6 treatments, 3 to 6 weeks apart

The maker suggests 3 to 5 at mild or moderate depths. Most published plans use 3.

CoolSculpting

One or more cycles per area

Then you wait roughly 8 to 12 weeks for the fat layer to thin.

The at-home or drugstore version

Morpheus8

No home version of the heat

A home wand puts a fraction of the power into the surface of the skin. It never reaches the depth the clinic device works at. A home roller drags sideways instead of going straight in and out, so it tears more than it punctures.

CoolSculpting

No home version of the cold

An ice pack only cools the surface. It cannot hold a fold of tissue at a set temperature long enough to kill fat cells. Creams sold for fat loss do not reach the fat layer at all.

Who tends to be happy with it

Morpheus8

  • Best for — Someone whose complaint is the skin itself: texture, acne scarring, crepiness, mild slackness.
  • The mindset — A course of treatments, then months of waiting while collagen does the work.

CoolSculpting

  • Best for — Someone near a stable weight with a bulge that will not shift and reasonably firm skin over it.
  • The mindset — One area, one problem, volume only.

Where the "Morpheus8 melts fat" idea comes from

Morpheus8

But that is not what Morpheus8 is doing on the face. No study shows it reduces fat as a treatment. The one study that measured the fat layer found no real change. Where fat loss does turn up in the published record, it turns up as a complaint, not a result.

The fine print

Morpheus8

Morpheus8 is made by InMode. It is built on the Fractora platform, first cleared in 2011, with deeper insulated needles and a new name. Its clearances use surgical wording: electrocoagulation and hemostasis since 2019 (K192695), and coagulation or contraction of soft tissue since 2023 (K231790). No Morpheus8 clearance names wrinkles, laxity, acne scars, cellulite, stretch marks or submental fat. The greatest needle depth in any FDA summary is 7.0 mm; depth is not something the FDA clears.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a Zeltiq/Allergan device, cleared for named fat areas. Its cold-assisted lipolysis indication covers the upper arm, bra fat, back fat, banana roll, thigh, abdomen and flank, in people with a body mass index of 30 or less. CoolSculpting Elite (K212707) was cleared on 5 November 2021. Treatment under the chin and jaw is indicated separately, up to a body mass index of 46.2. The FDA category for cryolipolysis was created by a de novo decision granted on 24 August 2010 (DEN090002).

InMode's cleared fat and cellulite wording belongs to other applicators. "Temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite" covers the BodyFX and WMbody applicators (K131362, 2013). "Non-invasive lipolysis of the abdomen" and "reduction in circumference of the abdomen" cover the Evolve Transform applicator, abdomen only (K231495, 2023). Neither claim belongs to Morpheus8.

Common questions

Questions Patients Ask

Will Morpheus8 get rid of my double chin?

Not the fat part of it. There is no dedicated trial of radiofrequency microneedling for submental fat, and the one study that measured the fat layer under the chin found it unchanged. There is evidence in this device class for tightening the skin there, not for removing the fat beneath it.

So which of these two suits a double chin?

It depends what the chin is made of. Fat under the chin is what cryolipolysis is separately indicated for, up to a body mass index of 46.2. Loose skin under the chin is the Morpheus8-type problem. Someone who examines you can tell you which one you have; a website cannot.

Is Morpheus8 FDA cleared for fat reduction?

No. Its clearances read electrocoagulation and hemostasis (2019) and coagulation or contraction of soft tissue (2023). InMode does hold cleared fat and cellulite wording, but on other applicators - BodyFX for cellulite, and Evolve Transform for lipolysis of the abdomen only.

Can Morpheus8 cause fat loss by accident?

It is reported. Fat loss is the third most common complication category in the FDA's post-market reports for this device class, 26 of 224 events between 2013 and 2025. There is no published incidence rate, no case series describing it and no established treatment. Against that, the one study that measured the fat layer found no significant change.

Can I have both?

They target different tissue, so there is no conflict in principle. No published study has tested them together, and the order matters - reducing fat can make loose skin more obvious - so discuss sequencing with your provider.

Which has more downtime?

Morpheus8. Redness is close to universal and visible recovery runs about three to four days. CoolSculpting leaves little to see, though the area is numb and firm for days to weeks and delayed pain in the first one to two weeks is common.

How long do Morpheus8 results last?

The longest properly measured follow-up in the radiofrequency microneedling literature is six months. Clinic claims of one to three years have no published source, and no study has followed patients that far.

Safety to keep in mind

RF microneedling can cause serious injury. The FDA has received reports of burns, scarring, loss of fat, nerve damage and disfigurement. Some injuries have needed surgery or other medical treatment. A few days of expected redness is not the full risk picture.

Choose a licensed medical professional trained on the device. Discuss the risks and other treatment options before deciding. RF microneedling should not be done at home.
