AirSculpt

AirSculpt targets the abdomen, flanks and other spots where fat is hard to shift.
These two are not the same kind of thing. AirSculpt is surgery — a brand of liposuction, done awake under local anaesthetic, where fat is suctioned out of your body during the appointment. CoolSculpting is a cooling cup held against the outside of the skin, with no cut and nothing removed on the day. If you want the fat gone in one visit and can take a real recovery, AirSculpt is the one that does that; if you want no surgery and can accept a subtle, slow change, CoolSculpting is the one that fits.

AirSculpt targets the abdomen, flanks and other spots where fat is hard to shift.

The applicator sits on the treatment area and cools the fat beneath it. The skin surface is protected.
Side by side
AirSculpt
One procedure, awake, local anaesthetic
Fat is loosened and sucked out through small access points. It leaves the body during the appointment, so the amount taken is known at the end. One procedure per area.
CoolSculpting
Several cooling cycles in an office
A fold of tissue is drawn into a cup and held cold for a set time. No cut, no anaesthetic. Cold harms fat cells more easily than skin, nerve, vessel and muscle. The fat cells die over the days after, and the debris is cleared over the following months. Treatment is sold in cycles, and most people buy several. In a chart review of 3,262 patients and 18,203 cycles at one multi-site practice, the middle patient had 4 cycles.
AirSculpt
The fat physically gone
The volume removed is measured in a canister at the end of the procedure. You see the shape once the swelling settles.
CoolSculpting
A thinner fat layer at that spot
A systematic review of 19 cryolipolysis studies found the fat layer thinned by 10% to 25% on ultrasound, depending on the study. An independent randomised trial that treated one side of the abdomen measured about 14% at 12 weeks. The change may be small enough that you are not sure you can see it.
AirSculpt
Not a weight-loss operation
In a series of 301 liposuction and tummy-tuck procedures, average weight change after lower-body liposuction was a loss of 2.2 lb.
CoolSculpting
Not a weight-loss treatment
The maker's own safety information says it does not replace diet, exercise or liposuction. The body mass index limit of 30 is a ceiling on who can be treated, not a target to be moved.
AirSculpt
The shape settles as swelling goes down
The volume taken out is known on the day. The final shape is not.
CoolSculpting
About three months
The fat layer thins over roughly three months as the body clears the damaged cells.
AirSculpt
No published follow-up
No study of the branded procedure has been published. Nothing in the medical literature tells you how long its results last.
CoolSculpting
No measured long-term group
The long-term published evidence is two men photographed at 2 and 5 years, and the same two men again at 6 and 9 years.
AirSculpt
Bleeding, infection, an uneven contour
These are the risks of an operation, not of a device session. A contour that ends up uneven may need redoing. How often that happens with this brand has not been published. Recovery runs to days, with compression garments and limits on activity. The recovery times you are quoted come from the brand, not from a study.
CoolSculpting
Numbness, soreness, a rare late lump
The area is numb, firm and often sore. A review of 554 procedures called delayed pain after treatment "not uncommon". It lasted 3 to 11 days and cleared up with no lasting effect. Numbness lasts longest — in a published study of 30 women who had their arms treated, 4 still had numbness beyond 12 weeks. A firm lump can also appear months later, which is covered further down.
AirSculpt
Thousands more, paid as an operation
RealSelf reviewers report an average of $13,362, ranging from $5,000 to $24,053. For scale, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons projects a 2024 surgeon fee of $4,300 to $7,500 for liposuction. That is the surgeon only. It leaves out the facility, the anaesthetic and the supplies.
CoolSculpting
Cheaper, sold by the cycle
RealSelf reviewers report an average of $3,268, ranging from $750 to $8,800.

AirSculpt
Almost nothing has been published on AirSculpt. It is a trademarked name for a type of liposuction. Liposuction in general has a large medical literature. This branded version has none. So the results and recovery times you are quoted come from the company, not research.
CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting's main studies measured a photograph, not fat. In the under-chin study of 60 people, three blinded doctors picked the right "before" photo 91% of the time. The fat layer thinned by an average of 2.0 mm on ultrasound. Only one of those numbers measures fat.
CoolSculpting
Three blood disorders rule out CoolSculpting completely. In each one, cold harms red blood cells. The maker names all three: cryoglobulinaemia, cold agglutinin disease and paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria. Say so if you have one.
AirSculpt
The AirSculpt Body Contouring System was cleared on 27 November 2024 under K241835, for removing tissue or fluid during general liposuction. No body area or body mass index limit appears, and clinical data was not required.
CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting sits in a separate FDA category for contact cooling, created by De Novo authorisation DEN090002 in 2010. CoolSculpting Elite was cleared as K212707 on 5 November 2021, for the upper arm, bra fat, back fat, banana roll, thigh, abdomen and flank at a body mass index of 30 or less, and for under the chin and jawline up to 46.2.
CoolSculpting is owned by Allergan Aesthetics, part of AbbVie. The AirSculpt 510(k) is held by Cellmyx of Carlsbad, California.
Common questions
Say so if you have a hernia in or near the area, or a repaired one. FDA notes reports of hernias after fat freezing. The maker tells providers to ask too.
Bleeding disorders and blood thinners matter for both. They matter more for surgery. Mention poor circulation, cold urticaria, Raynaud's disease or an implanted device too.
Neither device was cleared because FDA reviewed proof that it works. The 510(k) route asks only whether a device is much like one already on sale.
