Fraxel

The Fraxel handpiece is rolled slowly across the skin in overlapping passes. It treats in a grid of tiny columns, leaving untreated skin in between to speed healing.
Fraxel is best for brown patches and sun damage. It is a laser, so nothing enters the skin, but you will have a few visible days afterwards. Morpheus8 goes deeper, using tiny needles that carry heat. It suits acne scars and early sagging, and it is the safer choice in darker skin. No published trial has compared the two.
| The difference | Fraxel | Morpheus8 |
|---|---|---|
| What you actually do | Light through the skin, nothing enters | Needles in, heat from the tips |
| What you can expect to see | Clearer colour, smoother surface | Smoother texture, shallower scars |
| What it will not do | It cannot reach loose skin | It is not aimed at surface colour |
| Sessions | Depends on which wavelength is used | 1 to 6 visits, usually 3 to 5 |
| The downside | Redness, then a few sandpapery days | Redness, swelling, three to four days |

The Morpheus8 tip up close. The gold pins are what carry the radiofrequency energy below the surface — the needles are the delivery route, not the treatment itself.
Side by side
Fraxel
Light through the skin, nothing enters
A handpiece fires light, and the water in your skin soaks it up. That leaves tiny columns of heated skin with untreated skin in between. The wavelength sets the depth. 1927 nm works at and just under the surface. 1550 nm reaches deeper.
Morpheus8
Needles in, heat from the tips
Fine pins go into the skin and release radiofrequency heat. The pins are coated except for the last 0.5 mm. So the heat lands in the deeper skin, not at the entry point. Your provider sets how far the needles go.

The best-evidenced device for mature white marks, and useful on red ones too. It puts columns of controlled heat into the supportive layer to force a fresh round of collagen remodeling, over three to six sessions spaced weeks apart. Expect partial improvement in texture and how noticeable they are, not removal. On deeper skin tones it is used at conservative settings after a test patch, because of the pigment risk.

Heats columns in the dermis without removing the surface, so it improves fine lines, texture and pigment with a few days of redness and swelling instead of a week of raw skin. It takes three to five sessions to match a fraction of what one ablative treatment does. It is the more sensible starting point on deeper skin tones.

Treats the sun-damaged skin as a whole rather than targeting individual spots, so it improves texture and fine lines alongside the pigment. That makes it a reasonable choice when the spots are only part of what is bothering you. For clearing spots alone it is slower, dearer and less precise than freezing or a pigment laser.

Resurfaces without removing the surface, so recovery is a few days of redness and swelling rather than a week of raw skin. It gives less improvement per session than CO2 and needs more sessions to get there. It is the sensible middle option when the downtime of ablative laser is not workable.
Fraxel
Clearer colour, smoother surface
The 1927 nm setting is aimed at surface pigment and sun damage. The 1550 nm setting is aimed at texture, fine lines and scarring.
Morpheus8
Smoother texture, shallower scars
Better texture and shallower acne scars, with some tightening as a second effect. Acne scarring is the best-evidenced use of RF microneedling. A 2025 review covered 16 studies and 481 patients.
Fraxel
It cannot reach loose skin
Fraxel does not go deep enough to help a soft jawline or crepey neck skin.
Morpheus8
It is not aimed at surface colour
Its heat does not seek out pigment, so brown patches are not what it is built to clear.

Moderate evidence. Aimed at the same acne scar and texture problems, without light or heat, so the pigment risk is lower, which matters on deeper skin tones. Generally cheaper per session and gentler, and generally slower to show the same amount of change.

Strong evidence for surface pigment and clogged pores. Much cheaper and available almost anywhere. It works on the surface, so it does not reach indented scars and does far less for texture.

Limited evidence, from the same manufacturer. A far gentler version of the same idea, with about a day of downtime and a much smaller result per session. A reasonable choice for early texture and dullness, not a substitute for a course of Fraxel on scars.
Fraxel
Depends on which wavelength is used
A "Fraxel appointment" is not one fixed thing. Ask which wavelength is planned, and how many visits that means.
Morpheus8
1 to 6 visits, usually 3 to 5
Published plans cluster at three sessions, three to eight weeks apart. That is a convention copied between trials, not the result of a study comparing course lengths.
Fraxel
Redness, then a few sandpapery days
On 1927 nm, expect redness on day one. Then the surface turns bronzed and sandpapery for a few days. On 1550 nm, there is more swelling and several days of peeling.
Morpheus8
Redness, swelling, three to four days
Redness in almost everyone, and swelling in about 30% in one 40-patient study. Downtime runs three to four days. This is the one that leaves open channels in the skin, so wound care matters, and serums should stay off freshly treated skin.
Fraxel
Light is absorbed by pigment
Laser energy interacts with pigment. That is why non-ablative lasers are used more carefully in deeper skin tones.
Morpheus8
Heat by resistance, not by colour
Radiofrequency heats by resistance rather than by targeting pigment. That is why this class is often called colour-blind. It is not risk-free, and pigment change is still reported.
Fraxel
No home version of this laser
Home light devices put only a small fraction of the power into the skin. They cannot make the columns of heated skin this laser is built around. There is no home version.
Morpheus8
Home rollers are not this
Home needling tools have no radiofrequency in them, so the heating step is simply missing. A roller also drags sideways instead of going straight in and out, so it tears more than it punctures. Short needles blunt fast, and a blunt needle does more damage than a sharp one.

Morpheus8
Looseness is Morpheus8's alone. A soft jawline or crepey neck needs a treatment that can be set deep enough to try. Fraxel cannot reach that far.
Morpheus8
Almost no published study used Morpheus8 itself. The research behind RF microneedling was run on other machines. So people searching for Morpheus8 are usually being shown other devices' results.
Morpheus8
Morpheus8 is made by InMode. Its FDA clearances read electrocoagulation and hemostasis (K192695, 2019), which is surgical language for sealing tissue and stopping bleeding, and coagulation or contraction of soft tissue (K231790, 2023). Acne scars, wrinkles and laxity appear in neither. We could not confirm the exact wording of Fraxel's clearance, so its clearance number and use list are not quoted here. Ask the clinic which Fraxel clearance and which wavelength they are treating you with, and for what.
A 510(k) clearance means a device was judged much the same as an earlier one. It is not a finding that the treatment works, so this is a difference in what a regulator reviewed, not a measure of results. Off-label treatment with Morpheus8 is legal and completely routine.

Common questions
RF microneedling can cause serious injury. The FDA has received reports of burns, scarring, loss of fat, nerve damage and disfigurement. Some injuries have needed surgery or other medical treatment. A few days of expected redness is not the full risk picture.
Choose a licensed medical professional trained on the device. Discuss the risks and other treatment options before deciding. RF microneedling should not be done at home.
