CoolSculpting vs BodyTite

CoolSculpting works through the skin, with no cuts and no anaesthetic. A cooling applicator rests on the surface and freezes fat cells. BodyTite is surgery. A heated tube passes through a small cut into the fat layer, under anaesthetic, usually alongside liposuction — so it brings a real recovery and CoolSculpting does not.

What you actually do

CoolSculpting

An applicator sits on the outside

The skin is never broken. One or more cooling cycles are run per area.

BodyTite

A cannula goes under the skin

A thin tube, called a cannula, goes under the skin through a small cut. A second electrode rides on the surface. It is done under anaesthetic, usually alongside liposuction.

How it works

CoolSculpting

Cold

Fat cells die at temperatures that skin, nerves and blood vessels survive. Over about 8 to 12 weeks the body clears the dead cells. Nothing is done to the skin itself.

BodyTite

Heat

Radiofrequency current runs between the inner tube and the skin electrode. It heats and seals fat, plus the fibrous network running through it. Maker-aligned figures cap the heat at 69 to 70 degrees Celsius inside the fat, and 38 to 40 degrees at the surface.

What it is best at

CoolSculpting

A defined pocket of fat, nothing to see

Best for someone near a stable weight who wants a bulge reduced without interrupting normal life.

BodyTite

Removing larger volumes surgically

The same operation also heats the fibrous network under the skin.

What it will not do

CoolSculpting

It does nothing to loose skin

CoolSculpting takes fat out and leaves the skin exactly as it was. If your skin is already loose, expect it to look looser once the fat propping it up is gone.

BodyTite

It is not a non-surgical option

There are entry wounds, an anaesthetic and a genuine recovery. Skin tightening is BodyTite's whole pitch, and no randomised trial has tested it.

Downtime

CoolSculpting

Nothing much to see

The area is numb, red and firm for days to weeks. Pain or nerve-type pain often turns up a few days later, in the first week or two.

BodyTite

A surgical recovery

Entry wounds, swelling and bruising, plus an anaesthetic to recover from. No published study gives a recovery time for BodyTite, so none is quoted here.

The at-home or drugstore version

CoolSculpting

Freezing wraps are not the same thing

A belt or wrap you buy for home use does not hold a fold of tissue the way a clinic applicator does. It cools the surface, then warms up again. It never gets cold enough for long enough to kill fat cells.

BodyTite

There is no home version at all

BodyTite is an operation. Creams and handheld wands sold for body contouring sit on the surface and cannot reach the fat layer.

Who tends to be happy with it

CoolSculpting

  • Best for - Someone near a stable weight with a discrete bulge, reasonably firm skin over it, and no appetite for surgery.
  • The mindset - Small change, no interruption to normal life.

BodyTite

  • Best for - Someone already choosing surgery, who wants a larger volume removed and accepts anaesthesia, incisions and a real recovery.
  • The mindset - This is an operation and should be judged like one.

The evidence is thin on both sides

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting's main complication is well described. It is called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia. The treated fat pad gets firmer and larger, in the shape of the applicator, two to six months later. It does not go away on its own. It usually needs liposuction or surgery to remove it.

BodyTite

BodyTite has almost no independent evidence. A search of the medical literature returns about 32 records, and no randomised trial. Most of it is case series and technique papers. Several were written by paid consultants for the maker. The main safety study, from 2010, followed 23 patients and reported no severe problems. But the skin tightening in it was scored by the surgeon who did the operation. One case report describes deep skin burns after BodyTite.

Before you book

BodyTite

BodyTite sends radiofrequency current through the body. Tell the clinic if you have a pacemaker or a defibrillator. Say so too if you have a metal implant near the treatment area. These are standard cautions for radiofrequency devices, and your heart team is the right group to advise you.

Two more questions are worth asking about BodyTite. Who is performing it, and with what training. And whether liposuction is part of the same operation.

The fine print

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting was authorised through a De Novo request. DEN090002, decided 24 August 2010, created the FDA device category for cryolipolysis. CoolSculpting Elite, K212707, cleared 5 November 2021, covers cold-assisted lipolysis — breakdown of fat — of the upper arm, bra fat, back fat, banana roll, thigh, abdomen and flank, in people with a body mass index of 30 or less. Treatment under the chin and jaw is indicated separately, up to a body mass index of 46.2. CoolSculpting is a Zeltiq/Allergan device.

BodyTite

There is no FDA clearance whose device name is BodyTite. It is a handpiece sold under InMode's generic "InMode RF System" clearances, K163190 (12 December 2016) and K240780 (24 July 2024). The wording is electrocoagulation and hemostasis — surgical language for sealing tissue and stopping bleeding — and, in the 2024 version, coagulation or contraction of soft tissue. Liposuction, lipolysis, fat reduction, body contouring, skin tightening and skin laxity appear in none of it. So a clinic advertising BodyTite as "FDA-cleared for body contouring" is describing something that is not in the clearance. Off-label use is legal and routine, and a clearance is a finding of similarity to an earlier device rather than proof that a treatment works — so neither position tells you how well either performs.

Compare the total cost

CoolSculpting

Ask for the total across all CoolSculpting applicator cycles, areas and planned visits.

BodyTite

Ask whether the BodyTite quote includes liposuction, anesthesia, facility fees, compression garments and follow-up. A procedure package should not be compared with one fat-freezing cycle.

Common questions

Questions Patients Ask

Which one removes more fat?

Neither figure belongs to the device you are choosing between in the way it sounds. BodyTite is performed alongside liposuction, and liposuction is the instrument that removes the fat - the prospective 2010 safety study reported a mean liposuction aspirate of about 2,400 millilitres in those procedures. BodyTite's own clearance names no fat reduction at all. CoolSculpting thins a fat layer gradually over weeks and its clearance does name fat breakdown, by body area. They are not the same order of procedure.

Does CoolSculpting tighten skin?

No, and it has never been cleared as a skin-tightening device. No CoolSculpting indication contains the words laxity, wrinkle, lift, tighten or collagen. Removing fat from under slack skin can make the slackness more obvious.

Is BodyTite FDA-cleared for body contouring?

No. There is no 510(k) under the name BodyTite at all - it is a handpiece sold under InMode's general "InMode RF System" clearances, whose wording is electrocoagulation and hemostasis and, in the 2024 version, coagulation or contraction of soft tissue. Using it for contouring is off-label, which is legal and routine in aesthetics.

Do I need anaesthesia?

For BodyTite, yes - a cannula is passed under the skin through a small incision. CoolSculpting uses none.

Which has the shorter recovery?

CoolSculpting, clearly. There are no incisions. The area is numb, red and firm for days to weeks and delayed pain in the first one to two weeks is common, but nothing is healing closed. BodyTite is a surgical recovery, and there is no published measured duration for it.

What is the main risk with CoolSculpting?

Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, where the treated fat pad becomes firmer and larger two to six months later in the shape of the applicator. It does not resolve on its own and usually needs liposuction or excision. The best current estimate is 0.22 percent, about 1 in 455 patients, from a 2025 meta-analysis of 13,078 patients, graded low-certainty. The manufacturer's figure is 0.025 percent.

How good is the evidence behind BodyTite?

Thin. No randomised trial was identified. Most of what exists is case series and technique papers, several by paid InMode consultants, and one published case report describes deep skin burns after the procedure.

Safety to keep in mind

Even the wiring is described two ways. InMode and the clinical literature call the arrangement bipolar. The FDA's own 2026 summary for InMode's current platform calls the same handpieces monopolar, because the external electrode acts as a return. Both labels are in circulation.
