Versa Lip Filler vs Juvederm

The Revanesse lip filler is Revanesse Lips+, not Revanesse Versa. Versa's US approval is for facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from nose to mouth. The Juvederm lip fillers are Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Volbella XC. No other Juvederm product has a US lip approval, and no trial has ever compared the two families.

Which product is actually the lip filler

Revanesse Versa Lip Filler

Revanesse Lips+

Revanesse Versa's own approval is for facial wrinkles and folds. It is not a lip approval.

Juvederm

Juvederm Ultra XC and Volbella XC

Juvederm Ultra Plus XC has no US lip indication. It is often called the stronger lip option anyway.

What is in the syringe

Revanesse Versa Lip Filler

Hyaluronic acid gel

Revanesse Lips+ and Versa+ also contain 0.3% lidocaine, a numbing agent. Plain Revanesse Versa contains none.

Juvederm

Hyaluronic acid, thicker and thinner gels

Both contain 0.3% lidocaine. Volbella XC is the thinnest gel in the Juvederm range.

Syringe size

Revanesse Versa Lip Filler

1.2 mL

Both Versa and Versa+ and, later, Lips+ moved up from 1.0 mL.

Juvederm

1.0 mL, or a 0.55 mL fill

The smaller fill is an option for Volbella XC and Ultra XC.

What the lip trial measured

Revanesse Versa Lip Filler

91% improved a grade at month 2

158 people. Neither the patients nor the assessors knew which product they got. The comparison arm scored 93%. Follow-up stopped at 6 months. That comparison product is described only as an approved filler containing lidocaine, and the FDA record does not name it.

Juvederm

79% at month 3, 56% at month 12

Those are Juvederm Ultra XC's figures, from a 12-month trial against an untreated group. Volbella XC scored 80% at month 3 and 62% at month 12, in a 13-month trial against Restylane-L.

How much product it takes

Revanesse Versa Lip Filler

Up to 4.0 mL allowed in one session

The Lips+ protocol allowed 1.5 mL per lip, plus 1.0 mL for lines around the mouth. The average amount actually used is not reported.

Juvederm

About 2.2 mL for a first lip treatment

About 1.5 mL for a repeat, according to Juvederm Ultra XC's approved labelling.

The downside

Revanesse Versa Lip Filler

Swelling, bruising and tenderness

Lips swell more than most areas of the face.

Juvederm

Swelling, bruising and tenderness

The same picture, from the same kind of gel.

If you want it undone

Revanesse Versa Lip Filler

Dissolvable with hyaluronidase

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks hyaluronic acid down.

Juvederm

Dissolvable, but the most resistant tested

In one laboratory comparison, Juvederm gels and RHA 4 were the most resistant tested. They needed 300 units of the enzyme to break down within an hour. Revanesse products were not in that test, so nothing is published about how they compare.

Who tends to be happy with it

Revanesse Versa Lip Filler

  • Best for — Someone whose injector works with the Revanesse line. The published follow-up stops at 6 months.
  • The mindset — A plain lip treatment. Bigger standard syringe, thinner published record.

Juvederm

  • Best for — Someone who wants the longest published lip follow-up. Or a thinner gel for fine work on the lip border.
  • The mindset — Choose the specific Juvederm product for the job. The brand name on its own tells you nothing.

What the trial numbers do and do not tell you

Revanesse Versa Lip Filler

Revanesse Lips+ has no 12-month figure at all. Its trial stopped at 6 months.

Juvederm

Juvederm Ultra XC's lip figure falls from 79% at month 3 to 56% at month 12. By the last visit, close to half the treated group no longer met even a one-grade improvement. That is what "lasts up to a year" is built on. It is the edge of the follow-up window, not a typical result.

The fine print

Revanesse Versa Lip Filler

Revanesse Lips+ was approved on 21 September 2020. Its indication is lip augmentation in patients 22 years of age or older. Revanesse Versa was approved in 2017 for facial wrinkles and folds.

Juvederm

Juvederm Ultra XC gained a lip approval on 30 September 2015, and Volbella XC on 31 May 2016. Both describe use in adults over the age of 21; Volbella XC's also covers correction of perioral rhytids. Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, Voluma XC, Vollure XC, Volux XC and Skinvive have no lip indication.

Common questions

Questions Patients Ask

Is Revanesse Versa approved for lips?

No. Revanesse Versa is approved for injection into the mid to deep dermis for facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds. The lip approval in the Revanesse family belongs to Revanesse Lips+, approved on 21 September 2020 for submucosal implantation for lip augmentation in patients 22 years of age or older.

Which Juvederm is for lips?

Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Volbella XC. Ultra XC covers the lips and the perioral area; Volbella XC covers the lips and lines around the mouth. Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, Voluma XC, Vollure XC, Volux XC and Skinvive have no US lip indication.

Which one lasts longer?

Nobody can answer that from published evidence, because the two families were never tested against each other. Revanesse Lips+ was followed for 6 months in its trial. Juvederm Ultra XC was followed for 12 months in lips, ending at 56.4% responders, and Volbella XC for 13 months, ending at 61.8% at month 12. Different trials, different scales, not comparable.

Is the 1.2 mL Revanesse syringe better value?

It is genuinely more product. FDA approved the move from 1.0 mL to 1.2 mL for the Revanesse products, and the Juvederm lip products come in 1.0 mL or 0.55 mL. Whether that translates into a better result is unstudied, and price is set by the clinic rather than by the volume in the syringe.

Does one of them hurt less?

Revanesse Lips+ and Versa+ contain 0.3% lidocaine, and so do Juvederm Ultra XC and Volbella XC. Plain Revanesse Versa does not contain lidocaine. Most injectors also use topical or block anaesthesia for lips regardless of the product.

Can either one be dissolved?

Yes, both are hyaluronic acid and hyaluronidase breaks hyaluronic acid down. Two things are worth knowing. Dissolving filler is an off-label use of the enzyme in the US, and in one laboratory comparison Juvederm gels and RHA 4 were the most resistant tested, needing 300 units to break down within an hour. Revanesse was not in that test.

How much filler do lips actually take?

More than the "one syringe" framing suggests. The Revanesse Lips+ protocol permitted up to 4.0 mL in a session, and Juvederm Ultra XC's approved labeling gives about 2.2 mL as a typical initial lip treatment. None of that means more is better; it means the one-syringe unit is commercial rather than clinical, and no trial has compared doses.

What is the most common problem after lip filler?

Lumps. In a review of 53 published cases covering 82 complications, nodule formation was the most common, with migration, discoloration and cold sore flares also reported. Swelling and bruising for several days are expected rather than complications.

Safety to keep in mind

The age wording is not a rounding difference between the two companies. Prollenium's label says 22 years or older. Allergan's says over the age of 21.

Gel concentrations. Revanesse Lips+ and Versa are hyaluronic acid at 22 to 28 mg/mL. Juvederm Ultra XC is 24 mg/mL and Volbella XC is 15 mg/mL, the lowest in the Juvederm range.

The syringe sizes were approved separately. FDA approved the increase from 1.0 mL to 1.2 mL for Versa and Versa+ in March 2019, and for Lips+ in May 2021. The 0.55 mL fill was approved for Volbella XC in 2016 and for Ultra XC in 2019.

The lip scales are manufacturer scales. Prollenium, Allergan and Galderma each use their own. Revanesse is made by Prollenium; Juvederm is made by Allergan Aesthetics. Neither company publishes a patient price.
