Belotero Dermal Filler vs Juvederm

Belotero is the better fit for a nasolabial fold or an under-eye hollow. Those are the two areas where it has both an approval and a trial of its own. Juvederm covers more of the face, with seven products, each approved for a named area. No trial has compared the two brands against each other.

What the family contains in the US

Belotero

Four US products

Two of them have been on sale for years. They are Belotero Balance and Belotero Balance (+) Lidocaine. Two more were added in 2026. They are Belotero Intense (+) Lidocaine and Belotero Volume (+) Lidocaine. Belotero Soft and Belotero Hydro are not sold here.

Juvederm

Seven US products

Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC, Voluma XC, Vollure XC, Volbella XC, Volux XC and Skinvive.

Where on the face it is used

Belotero

Folds, under-eyes, lips and the mid-face

Belotero Balance is the fold product. The under-eye belongs to Balance (+). Lips belong to Intense (+) Lidocaine, and the mid-face to Volume (+) Lidocaine.

Juvederm

Most of the face, one product per area

Voluma XC does cheeks, chin and temples. Volux XC does the jawline. Volbella XC does lips and the under-eye. Skinvive smooths the cheeks and neck. Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC and Vollure XC do folds.

What the trials measured

Belotero

118 people, against a collagen filler

At 24 weeks, 55% of treated nasolabial folds had improved by more than one point.

Juvederm

A separate trial for each product

The Voluma XC trial ran 24 months. Responders fell from 86% at 6 months to 67% at 24 months.

The technology names

Belotero

The maker calls it CPM

CPM is short for Cohesive Polydensified Matrix. The name appears nowhere in the FDA record.

Juvederm

Hylacross and Vycross

Neither name is in the FDA record either. It calls Juvederm crosslinked sodium hyaluronate, made by bacteria.

If you want it undone

Belotero

Hyaluronidase breaks it down

The enzyme is called hyaluronidase. It breaks down any filler made of hyaluronic acid.

Juvederm

Hyaluronidase, but more of it

In one laboratory comparison, Juvederm gels were among the most resistant tested. They needed 300 units to break down within an hour.

Cost

Belotero

No published per-syringe price

The maker does not publish a patient price.

Juvederm

No published per-syringe price

Neither does the maker of Juvederm.

The at-home or drugstore version

Belotero

There is no home version

Lip plumpers sold over the counter irritate the lip, so it swells for a few hours. That is a different thing wearing the same name.

Juvederm

There is no home version

Hyaluronic acid serums sit on the surface and hold water there. A filler works because a gel is placed millimetres down. Nothing you rub on can get there.

Who tends to be happy with it

Belotero

  • Best for — Someone whose concern is a nasolabial fold or an under-eye hollow. Belotero has both an approval and its own trial there.
  • The mindset — A narrow line, used in a few places, rather than a product for every part of the face.

Juvederm

  • Best for — Someone being treated on the cheeks, chin, temples, jawline or lips. Juvederm has an approval and trial data for each area.
  • The mindset — Pick the product for the area, not the brand.

What "superficial placement" is really about

Belotero

Belotero's signature claim is that it can be placed finely, close to the surface. That claim exists because filler placed near the surface can look bad. The gel scatters light. It then shows through thin skin as a blue-grey shadow, called the Tyndall effect. That shows most under the eyes, where the skin is thinnest.

Belotero and the under-eye

Belotero

This is where Belotero has its strongest published data. The trial behind the under-eye approval followed 150 people to 48 weeks. At the final visit, 81% still met a one-grade improvement.

The fine print

Belotero

Belotero is made by Merz. Juvederm is made by Allergan Aesthetics. Fillers are FDA approved rather than cleared, and each approval names one area of the face. Nothing about one product in a family transfers to another.

Belotero has four approved US products. Belotero Balance and Belotero Balance (+) Lidocaine cover facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds, and the under-eye hollow was added in September 2023. Belotero Volume (+) Lidocaine was approved for the mid-face in May 2026, and Belotero Intense (+) Lidocaine for lips in July 2026. Belotero gel is 22.5 mg/mL hyaluronic acid; the "(+)" versions add 0.3% lidocaine.

Juvederm

Juvederm's seven products sit under two FDA approvals. One from 2006 covers the Ultra line, and one from 2013 covers everything else. Voluma XC holds cheeks, chin and temples. Volux XC holds jawline definition. Volbella XC holds lips and the under-eye. Skinvive holds skin smoothness of the cheeks and, since June 2026, neck lines. Concentrations run from 15 to 25 mg/mL: Volbella XC 15, Vollure XC 17.5, Voluma XC 20, Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC 24, and Volux XC 25. Skinvive's concentration is not stated in the FDA record. The XC versions contain 0.3% lidocaine.

Common questions

Questions Patients Ask

Is Belotero thinner than Juvederm?

Belotero Balance is 22.5 mg/mL hyaluronic acid; Juvederm products range from 15 mg/mL for Volbella XC to 25 mg/mL for Volux XC. Concentration is a poor guide to how a gel behaves, and no independent, standardised firmness comparison across brands exists. The published firmness values only compare within one manufacturer's own technology at one concentration.

What is CPM technology?

It is Merz's trademark for how Belotero is made, standing for Cohesive Polydensified Matrix. The term does not appear in the FDA record for the product, which describes Belotero in generic chemical terms as bacterially fermented hyaluronic acid crosslinked with BDDE. Allergan's Hylacross and Vycross names are absent from the FDA record in exactly the same way.

Which one is approved for under-eyes?

Both, but by specific products. Belotero Balance (+) gained an infraorbital hollow indication in September 2023, and Juvederm Volbella XC gained one in May 2021. Restylane Eyelight and RHA Redensity Eye and Eye Lido also carry one. Their trial results come from separate studies with different scales and cannot be ranked against each other.

Can I get Belotero in my lips?

Belotero Intense (+) Lidocaine was approved for lip augmentation in July 2026, so there is now a US Belotero lip product. Belotero Balance is not approved for lips. On the Juvederm side, the lip approvals belong to Ultra XC and Volbella XC only.

Which lasts longer?

There is no published answer, because the two brands have never been tested against each other. Each figure that exists comes from its own trial: Belotero Balance's nasolabial fold trial reported 55.1% of folds better than a one-point improvement at 24 weeks; Vollure XC's ran to 18 months; Voluma XC's to 24 months. Different areas, different scales, no comparison possible.

Is Belotero Soft available in the US?

No. Belotero Soft and Belotero Hydro have no findable US approval. Only Belotero Balance, Balance (+) Lidocaine, Intense (+) Lidocaine and Volume (+) Lidocaine are FDA-approved.

Can both be dissolved?

Yes. Both are hyaluronic acid, and hyaluronidase breaks hyaluronic acid down. Using it to dissolve filler is off-label in the US. In one laboratory comparison Juvederm gels were among the most resistant tested, needing 300 units to break down within an hour, and published emergency guidance notes that Vycross-family products can require hundreds of units per millilitre.

Why does the blue tinge under the eyes happen?

Hyaluronic acid placed close to the surface scatters blue light, which shows through thin skin as a grey-blue shadow. It is called the Tyndall effect and it is most visible under the eyes. It is treated with hyaluronidase. No reliable figure has been published for how often it occurs.

Safety to keep in mind

The temple indication comes with a training requirement. Voluma XC is only supplied to injectors who have completed an FDA-approved training course.
