Sculptra vs Radiesse

The big difference is timing. Sculptra shows nothing on the day and builds collagen over months, across a course of two to four visits. Radiesse gives some lift straight away, then builds collagen too. Neither one can be dissolved, so neither can be undone.

Sculptra

Diagram of a needle placing PLLA microparticles into the dermis, with later panels showing cells arriving and new collagen fibres forming.

How Sculptra works. The PLLA microparticles add almost no volume themselves — they prompt your own collagen to build up gradually over months.

Radiesse

Diagram of a needle placing calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres into the dermis, with later panels showing new collagen forming around them.

How Radiesse works. The CaHA microspheres give lift straight away, then act as a scaffold while new collagen forms around them.

The differences that matter

12 comparison points

What it is made of

Sculptra

Poly-L-lactic acid

The same material used in dissolvable stitches. It is suspended in liquid and injected as a fine spread.

Radiesse

Calcium hydroxylapatite

Tiny calcium microspheres, the same mineral found in bone, suspended in a gel.

Do you see anything on the day

Sculptra

No

There is swelling from the fluid. It settles within a few days. Then you look the same as before while collagen builds. Looking unchanged a week later is what is supposed to happen.

Radiesse

Yes

The gel gives volume right away. That fades over a few months as the gel absorbs, and collagen replaces it.

How long until you see the result

Sculptra

Two to three months

Sometimes longer. It is a slow build.

Radiesse

Now, then a dip, then a build

You look fuller straight away, less full at around two months, then better again.

How many sessions

Sculptra

Usually two to four

Spaced about a month apart. It is a course, not one appointment.

Radiesse

Often one

Sometimes a touch-up later.

How long it lasts

Sculptra

About two years

Radiesse

About one year

What it is used for

Sculptra

Broad areas

Hollow cheeks, temples, overall facial thinning. Also used on the body, such as crepey skin above the knees.

Radiesse

Structure and lines

Jawline, chin, cheekbones, backs of the hands. It has more lift, so it suits a defined edge.

Can it be reversed

Sculptra

No

Radiesse

No

Main risk to know

Sculptra

Small lumps under the skin

Uncommon, and mostly preventable. That is why the product is spread widely rather than placed in one spot. It is also why massage afterwards is part of the instructions.

Radiesse

Not for the lips

Radiesse has a higher rate of lumps in lip tissue, so it is not used there.

Aftercare

Sculptra

Massage

Many injectors ask for five minutes, five times a day, for five days.

Radiesse

Less involved

Usual filler aftercare. Avoid heavy exercise and heat for a day or two.

Cost

Sculptra

Priced per session, and it is a course

Ask for the cost of the whole plan.

Radiesse

Priced per session, usually fewer of them

Often one appointment, so the total is easier to pin down.

Who each suits

Sculptra

  • Best for — Overall volume loss across the face, and someone happy to wait.
  • The mindset — You want gradual change nobody can point to.

Radiesse

  • Best for — Jawline and chin definition, and hands.
  • The mindset — You want to see something now, and accept it cannot be undone.

What neither one does

Common questions

Questions Patients Ask

Radiesse vs Sculptra — what is the difference?

Both are biostimulators that prompt your own collagen rather than filling a space, and neither can be dissolved. Radiesse gives some lift on the day and then builds collagen. Sculptra gives nothing on the day and builds more collagen gradually over months. Radiesse is the quicker one; Sculptra is the more gradual one.

Are these fillers?

Not in the usual sense. They are biostimulators. A standard filler like Juvéderm or Restylane is hyaluronic acid gel that fills a space and can be dissolved. Neither of these can be dissolved.

Which lasts longer?

Sculptra, at roughly two years versus about one. Longer is only an advantage if you like the result, since neither can be reversed.

Can Sculptra or Radiesse be dissolved if I don't like it?

No. This is the most important difference between these and hyaluronic acid fillers. If you are new to injectables, starting with something dissolvable is the lower-risk way to learn what you like.

Why can't I see anything after my Sculptra appointment?

That is expected. The swelling right after is from the liquid it is suspended in, and it settles within days. The actual result builds over two to three months as collagen forms.

How many sessions will I need?

Sculptra is usually a course of two to four sessions about a month apart. Radiesse is often a single session with a possible touch-up.

Which one is better for the jawline?

Radiesse is more commonly used there. It has more lift, which suits a defined edge. Sculptra suits broad volume loss across cheeks and temples better.

Can Radiesse be used in lips?

No. It has a higher rate of lumps in lip tissue and is not used there.

Do these tighten loose skin?

No. If skin laxity is your main concern, these will disappoint you. That is a question for energy-based devices or surgery.

What is the serious risk?

The rare one shared by all injectables: product entering a blood vessel. Call your injector the same day if the skin turns white, blotchy or dusky, if pain is getting worse, or if your vision changes at all. This is why who injects you matters more than which product they use.
