Sculptra vs Filler

Sculptra is better for a face that has thinned out all over. It builds your own collagen over three to six months, across two or three visits. Hyaluronic acid filler is better for one area you can point at, and for anyone new to injectables. It works the day you have it, and it can be dissolved if you change your mind.

Sculptra

Gloved hands injecting the cheek of a person lying down.

Sculptra is injected deep in the cheek. It builds slowly over months instead of filling the area that day.

Dermal Fillers

Gloved hands injecting the cheek of a person lying down.

Filler is placed under the skin with a fine needle or a blunt cannula. Most visits take 15 to 30 minutes.

What it does

Sculptra

Builds your own collagen

Poly-L-lactic acid is the same material used in dissolvable stitches. It prompts your skin to lay down collagen, then it breaks down and leaves.

Dermal Fillers

Adds volume on the day

A gel made from hyaluronic acid, a sugar your skin already makes. It sits where it is placed and holds the space open.

When you see the result

Sculptra

Three to six months

You look much the same for the first few weeks. Any fullness on the day is swelling, not result.

Dermal Fillers

Straight away

You walk out with the change. Swelling settles over about two weeks and the look settles with it.

How many visits

Sculptra

Usually two or three

Spaced about a month apart. It is a course, not an appointment.

Dermal Fillers

Usually one

A top-up later if you want more.

How long it lasts

Sculptra

About two years

Dermal Fillers

Around six to eighteen months

What it suits

Sculptra

Broad, all-over thinning

Hollow cheeks, temples, a face that has lost volume everywhere at once. It is also used on the body, such as crepey skin above the knees.

Dermal Fillers

One defined area

Lips, chin, under-eye hollows, a single deep fold. It can be placed precisely and shaped as it goes in.

Can it be undone

Sculptra

No

You wait it out, and that takes months to years.

Dermal Fillers

Yes

An enzyme called hyaluronidase dissolves it, usually within a day or two.

What the appointment is like

Sculptra

Injections, then homework

Numbing first. Many injectors then ask you to massage the area for five minutes, five times a day, for five days.

Dermal Fillers

Injections, little to do after

Most products contain a numbing agent already. Avoid heat and hard exercise for a day or two.

Side effects to expect

Sculptra

Bruising, swelling, tenderness

Small lumps under the skin are the one to know about. They are uncommon, and they can appear months later. Spreading the product widely and massaging afterwards lowers the risk.

Dermal Fillers

Bruising, swelling, tenderness

Lumps and unevenness happen here too, but they turn up in the first days and can be dissolved.

Cost

Sculptra

Priced per vial, across a course

Ask what the whole plan costs, not what one session costs.

Dermal Fillers

Priced per syringe, usually one visit

Easier to price up front. Repeat visits add up over the years.

The at-home or drugstore version

Sculptra

There is not one

No cream carries poly-L-lactic acid down to the layer where collagen is built. Collagen drinks and collagen creams are a different thing wearing the same word.

Dermal Fillers

A hyaluronic acid serum

A serum holds water in the top layer of skin and plumps the surface for a few hours. Filler goes millimetres down. Same molecule, different depth, different job.

Who each suits

Sculptra

  • Best for — Volume loss across the whole face, and someone happy to wait.
  • The mindset — You want gradual change that nobody can point to.

Dermal Fillers

  • Best for — One area you can point at, and a first-timer.
  • The mindset — You want to see it today, and you want a way out.

The real decision is instant versus gradual

Sculptra

Sculptra answers a wider one: can my whole face look less drawn. It is spread thinly across a large area, and the change arrives so slowly that most people notice it in photos rather than in the mirror.

Reversibility is the bigger deal than longevity

Sculptra

Sculptra cannot be taken back out. There is no antidote. If you do not like the result, the plan is to wait, and the wait is measured in years.

Common questions

Questions Patients Ask

Is Sculptra a filler?

Not in the usual sense. Regular filler is a gel that takes up space the moment it goes in. Sculptra is a collagen stimulator, so the material breaks down and what you are left with is your own collagen.

Which one looks more natural?

Both look natural when they are done well. Sculptra changes so slowly that people rarely spot the moment it happened, which some people prefer. Filler is more precise, so it depends more on the injector's judgement about how much to use.

Can Sculptra be dissolved if I hate it?

No. There is no enzyme that removes it. If you dislike the result, you wait for it to fade, which takes a couple of years. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved in a day or two.

Is Sculptra more expensive than filler?

Per session it is usually similar, but Sculptra is a course of two or three sessions, so the upfront bill is higher. Over several years the gap narrows, because filler needs repeating more often. Ask for the total cost of the plan.

Can I have Sculptra and filler at the same time?

Yes, and it is common. Sculptra is often used for broad volume in the cheeks and temples, with filler added for a specific feature such as the lips or chin. Most injectors space the two out rather than doing them on the same day.

How long do I wait before I know if Sculptra worked?

Give it three to six months from the last session. Looking unchanged at the two-week mark is normal and is not a sign that it failed.
