Radio Frequency Fat Reduction vs CoolSculpting

Radiofrequency fat reduction warms fat with an electrical current. It has been reviewed for the abdomen, and only with the one applicator built for that. CoolSculpting works on a discrete, pinchable bulge in one of several named areas. It holds a fold of tissue cold enough to damage fat cells, and the body clears them over roughly two to three months.

Radiofrequency fat reduction

Applicators strapped on, warming the fat You lie still while hands-free applicators warm the tissue underneath. Which applicator you get is the whole question. Evolve Transform is the one with the abdominal fat wording, and it pairs radiofrequency with muscle stimulation. BodyFX, WMbody and EmBodyFX, sold as Evolve Trim, are the cellulite ones. Ask for the name of the applicator, not the name of the platform.

What you actually do

Radiofrequency fat reduction

Applicators strapped on, warming the fat

You lie still while hands-free applicators warm the tissue underneath.

CoolSculpting

A cooling cup holds a fold of tissue

A vacuum applicator pulls a fold of tissue between cooling plates. Target temperatures go down to -15 degrees C. Nothing is done to the skin itself.

What you can expect to see

Radiofrequency fat reduction

The abdomen, or softer-looking cellulite

The abdomen is the only area where fat reduction has been reviewed at all, and only for one applicator. Everywhere else the honest answer on this side is the appearance of cellulite. That claim is worded as temporary.

CoolSculpting

A smaller bulge in a named area

The fat layer thins over roughly 8 to 12 weeks as the body clears the damaged cells. The named areas are the upper arm, bra fat, back fat, banana roll, thigh, abdomen and flank, plus under the chin and jaw.

What it will not do

Radiofrequency fat reduction

It will not tighten skin

This will not tighten loose skin, and the applicators marketed for tightening do not either. Microneedling with radiofrequency, like Morpheus8, is not a fat treatment at all.

CoolSculpting

It will not tighten skin

CoolSculpting is not a skin treatment. Nothing it is cleared for mentions laxity, wrinkles, lifting or collagen.

The downside

Radiofrequency fat reduction

Recovery time is not documented

No published study gives a recovery time for these applicators, so no number is quoted here. Ask the clinic for their own expected timeline, in writing. What people describe is warmth, with the applicators strapped in place.

CoolSculpting

Numb, red and firm for days to weeks

A vacuum pulls a fold of tissue in and the area goes numb as it cools. Delayed pain or nerve discomfort in the first one to two weeks is common. It is the part people are least prepared for. There is also a rare complication where the treated fat pad grows instead of shrinking.

Cost

Radiofrequency fat reduction

No reliable published price

No professional society publishes fee data for either one. A clinic price list is advertising, not an average.

CoolSculpting

No reliable published price, paid per cycle

You pay per cycle. Ask for a written quote covering the full course, not one cycle.

The at-home or drugstore version

Radiofrequency fat reduction

Home radiofrequency wands

A home wand puts a fraction of the power into the surface. It never reaches the depth a clinic applicator works at. Warming the top of the skin does nothing to fat centimetres below it.

CoolSculpting

Fat-freezing belts and gel packs

A cold pack cannot hold a fold of tissue at a set temperature for the time needed, and it cannot control how cold the skin gets. Cold that is not controlled injures skin before it reaches fat.

Who tends to be happy with it

Radiofrequency fat reduction

  • Best for — Someone whose target is the abdomen and who has checked which applicator is being used.
  • Best for — Someone who wants cellulite to look smoother, and accepts that the effect is worded as temporary.
  • The mindset — Ask what is going on your body, not what the machine is called.

CoolSculpting

  • Best for — Someone at a stable weight with a pinchable bulge in one of the named areas. No needles, no visible recovery.
  • The mindset — Patience. The change builds over roughly two to three months.

The risk that belongs to freezing

Radiofrequency fat reduction

There is no counterpart to this on the radiofrequency side. It is not a reason on its own to rule CoolSculpting out. You should just hear it before you book rather than afterwards.

Fat loss on the radiofrequency side is a different story

Radiofrequency fat reduction

No one has measured how often radiofrequency devices cause unwanted fat loss. It does get reported after radiofrequency microneedling. But those are scattered complaint reports. Nobody knows how many people were treated, so they cannot tell you your own risk.

Before you book

Radiofrequency fat reduction

If what you are booked for is really radiofrequency microneedling, say so at booking if you get cold sores. Needles are a different treatment from a hands-free applicator. Antiviral medicine is started in advance, not after a blister appears.

The fine print

Radiofrequency fat reduction

On the radiofrequency side the fat and cellulite claims belong to named applicators. Evolve Transform (K231495, October 2023) is cleared, in a sequential radiofrequency and muscle-stimulation mode, for "non-invasive lipolysis (breakdown of fat) of the abdomen" and "reduction in circumference of the abdomen" — abdomen only, not arms, thighs, flanks or chin. BodyFX, WMbody and EmBodyFX, sold as Evolve Trim, are cleared for "temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite" using radiofrequency combined with massage, at 1 MHz and 10 to 50 W: WMbody under K131362 (2013), EmBodyFX under K183450 (2019). BodyTite and FaceTite name no fat reduction at all.

Radiofrequency microneedling carries no fat wording anywhere. Fat reduction, body contouring and cellulite appear in none of Morpheus8's clearances. InMode's Evolve Tite applicator, cleared as EmBodyPlus under K183450, covers temporary relief of minor muscle aches and pain, temporary relief of muscle spasm, and temporary improvement of local blood circulation.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting has the more specific paperwork of the two. It was granted through a De Novo request in August 2010 (DEN090002), which created the FDA category for this technology. The CoolSculpting Elite clearance (K212707, November 2021) names "cold-assisted lipolysis (breakdown of fat) of the upper arm, bra fat, back fat, banana roll, thigh, abdomen, and flank, or 'love handles' in individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or less." Under the chin and jaw is indicated separately, up to a BMI of 46.2. No CoolSculpting indication contains the words laxity, wrinkle, lift, tighten or collagen.

Common questions

Questions Patients Ask

Does radiofrequency actually reduce fat?

For one specific applicator and one specific area, yes, that is the cleared wording: InMode's Evolve Transform is cleared for non-invasive lipolysis of the abdomen and reduction in abdominal circumference. That is abdomen only. Most radiofrequency devices marketed for the body carry no fat wording at all, and radiofrequency microneedling carries none anywhere.

Is Morpheus8 a fat-reduction treatment?

No. Fat reduction, body contouring and cellulite appear in none of its clearances, and the one study that measured the fat layer under the chin by ultrasound after this kind of radiofrequency found it unchanged while the skin thickened. Fat loss appears in FDA post-market reports for the device class as an unwanted event, not as a result you would book for.

Which removes more fat?

CoolSculpting has the more specific cleared wording for fat, across seven body areas plus under the chin, with a BMI limit written into the indication. On the radiofrequency side only the abdomen has a fat indication. Neither is a weight-loss treatment, and neither has a published head-to-head trial against the other.

What is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia?

A firm, well-defined enlargement of the treated fat pad that appears roughly two to six months after cryolipolysis and matches the shape of the applicator. It does not go away on its own and usually needs liposuction or surgical removal. A 2025 meta-analysis of 28 studies and 13,078 patients estimated the pooled incidence at 0.22 per cent - about 1 in 455 people - graded low-certainty, and higher than the manufacturer's quoted 0.025 per cent.

Will either one tighten my skin?

Not according to what either is cleared for. No CoolSculpting indication contains the words laxity, wrinkle, lift, tighten or collagen, and InMode's Evolve Tite applicator is cleared for muscle aches, muscle spasm and local blood circulation rather than tightening. Losing fat can also make loose skin more obvious, so raise it separately at the consultation.

Which has less downtime?

Neither breaks the skin, so neither has a visible recovery in the usual sense. After cryolipolysis the treated area is commonly numb, red and firm for days to weeks, with delayed-onset pain or nerve discomfort common in the first one to two weeks. For the radiofrequency body applicators no published study or labelled figure gives a recovery time, so no number is quoted here - ask the clinic for theirs.

What do they cost?

There is no reliable published price for either treatment. No professional society publishes fee data for these procedures, and clinic price lists are advertising for one clinic in one market rather than an average. Ask for a written quote covering the full course, not one cycle or one session.

Safety to keep in mind

A clearance is a judgement of similarity to an earlier device, not proof of benefit. What it does tell you is which body area was reviewed. "FDA cleared" on its own tells you nothing about the area or the effect.
