Juvederm vs Voluma

Juvéderm is a family of hyaluronic acid gels, not one product. It runs from a very soft gel for lips to a firm one for the jaw, and each is built for a different part of the face. Voluma is one member of that family, and it is the cheek one. So comparing the two is really a question about which gel suits the area you want treated.

The differences that matter

13 comparison points

What the name means

Juvederm

A range of gels under one brand

Around seven products, each with its own thickness and its own job. A clinic that says only "Juvéderm" has not yet told you which one.

Juvéderm Voluma

The firm one, made for cheeks

A thick gel placed deep over the cheekbone to lift the mid-face.

What is in it

Juvederm

Cross-linked hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar your skin already makes. Cross-linking is what lets a gel hold its shape instead of washing away.

Juvéderm Voluma

The same, cross-linked more firmly

Voluma is stiffer than the rest of the range, so it can hold a projected shape against the weight of the face.

Which area it treats

Juvederm

Depends entirely on the product

Lips and lip lines, the folds from nose to mouth, chin, jawline, under-eye hollows, cheeks. Naming the area is what picks the gel.

Juvéderm Voluma

The mid-face

Flat or hollow cheeks. It is also used in the temples and the chin, where the same firmness helps.

How thick the gel is

Juvederm

Softest to firmest

Volbella at the soft end for lips and delicate skin, Volux at the firm end for the jaw, the rest in between.

Juvéderm Voluma

Near the top of the range

Stiff enough to lift, which is exactly why it would feel wrong in a lip.

Juvéderm Voluma

How long it lasts

Juvederm

Roughly one to two years

Lips wear filler down fastest because they move constantly. Areas that barely move keep it longest.

Juvéderm Voluma

Up to about two years

The cheek moves very little, so the gel is left alone and sits near the top of that range.

How much is usually used

Juvederm

Depends on the area

Half a syringe can be plenty in a lip.

Juvéderm Voluma

Often one syringe per side

Cheeks are a large area, so budget for two rather than one.

Can it be undone

Juvederm

Yes

Juvéderm Voluma

Yes

Side effects to expect

Juvederm

Bruising, swelling, tenderness

Lumps and unevenness happen, and they can be dissolved.

Juvéderm Voluma

Bruising, swelling, tenderness

Placed too shallow or in too great a volume, it can read as a heavy, over-full cheek.

Cost

Juvederm

Priced per syringe

The thicker gels usually cost more per syringe than the thin ones.

Juvéderm Voluma

Priced per syringe, usually two

Price the plan for both cheeks, not the single syringe.

The at-home or drugstore version

Juvederm

A hyaluronic acid serum

A serum holds water in the top layer of skin and plumps the surface for a few hours. Filler goes millimetres down. Same molecule, different depth, different job.

Juvéderm Voluma

Nothing reaches a cheekbone

Voluma is placed near the bone. No cream, roller or facial device puts anything there.

Who each suits

Juvederm

  • Best for — Anyone who has not yet settled on an area.
  • The mindset — Name the problem and let the injector pick the gel.

Juvéderm Voluma

  • Best for — Flat cheeks and a mid-face that has lost fullness.
  • The mindset — You want visible lift and structure.

The wrong gel in the right place still looks wrong

Common questions

Questions Patients Ask

Is Voluma the same as Juvéderm?

Voluma is one product inside the Juvéderm family. Juvéderm is the brand name for a range of hyaluronic acid gels, and Voluma is the firm one made for cheeks.

Which Juvéderm product is best for cheeks?

Voluma. It is stiff enough to be placed deep on the cheekbone and support the tissue above it, which the softer gels in the range cannot do.

Can Voluma be used in lips?

It is not the right gel for lips. It is built to resist pressure, so it can feel firm and move unnaturally. Volbella and Ultra are the lip products in the family.

Which Juvéderm lasts the longest?

Voluma in the cheek is one of the longest, at up to about two years, largely because the cheek barely moves. Lip products fade fastest for the same reason.

Can all Juvéderm products be dissolved?

Yes. Every product in the family is hyaluronic acid, so an enzyme called hyaluronidase removes any of them, usually within a day or two.

My clinic quoted me "Juvéderm" without naming a product. Should I ask?

Yes. The products differ in thickness, in the area they suit and often in price, so knowing which one you are getting is a fair question.
