Miradry vs Botox

MiraDry destroys the sweat glands under your arms, so the result is meant to be permanent. It uses microwave energy, and most people need one or two treatments. Botox blocks the nerve signal that switches those glands on, so the result wears off. It is a set of small injections that lasts several months before you repeat it. The real choice is between something permanent that you cannot adjust and something temporary that you can.

miraDry

Gloved hand holding a miraDry handpiece against a person's underarm.

miraDry treats the underarm. The handpiece sits on numbed skin and heats the sweat glands below it.

Botox for Sweating

Gloved hands injecting the face of a person lying down.

Botox goes into the muscle with a very fine needle. Most visits take about ten minutes.

Side by side

The differences that matter

12 comparison points

What it does

miraDry

Destroys the sweat glands

A handpiece pulls the skin up by suction and heats the layer where the glands sit. The glands are damaged for good and do not grow back.

Botox for Sweating

Switches the glands off

The toxin blocks the nerve messenger that tells sweat glands to work. The glands stay there, unused, until the effect fades.

What it treats

miraDry

Underarms

Sweat, and usually odour and underarm hair too, since those structures sit at the same depth.

Botox for Sweating

Underarms, hands, feet, head

It can be used almost anywhere sweating is a problem, which MiraDry cannot.

How soon it works

miraDry

Right away, then better

Sweating drops immediately, and the final level settles over about three months.

Botox for Sweating

Two to seven days

Full effect by about two weeks.

How long it lasts

miraDry

Meant to be permanent

Sweat glands do not regenerate. Some people still need a second treatment to get the reduction they want.

Botox for Sweating

Around four to six months

Some people get longer. You book again when sweating returns.

How many visits

miraDry

One or two

A second session, about three months later, is common rather than a sign something went wrong.

Botox for Sweating

Two or three a year, ongoing

For as long as you want the result.

What it feels like

miraDry

Numbing injections, then heat and pulling

Several anaesthetic injections into each armpit first, which is the sore part. Then about an hour of suction, warmth and cooling.

Botox for Sweating

Many small stings

Around fifteen to twenty tiny injections per armpit, just under the skin. It takes minutes. Numbing cream or ice helps.

Downtime

miraDry

Swollen and sore for days

Expect swelling, tenderness and a sunburnt feeling once the numbing wears off. Most of it settles within a week. Lumpiness under the arm can linger for a few weeks.

Botox for Sweating

None to speak of

Some bruising or tenderness at the injection points. People go straight back to work.

Main risk to know

miraDry

Numbness and tingling

Altered sensation in the underarm or upper arm is common and usually settles within weeks. Lasting nerve irritation is rare but has been reported. Permanent hair loss in the area is expected, not a complication.

Botox for Sweating

It is temporary, and needles are involved

Bruising and short-lived soreness. When used on the palms, temporary weakness in the hand grip can happen. It does not happen with underarms.

Cost

miraDry

High once, or twice

A large upfront cost, then in principle nothing more.

Botox for Sweating

Lower each time, forever

Cheaper per visit, repeated two or three times a year. Over several years the running total can pass what MiraDry costs. Ask about insurance, since injections for diagnosed excessive sweating are sometimes covered when antiperspirants have failed.

The at-home or drugstore version

miraDry

There is none

No home device delivers microwave energy to that depth. Nothing sold for home use destroys a sweat gland.

Botox for Sweating

Clinical-strength antiperspirant

An aluminium chloride antiperspirant applied at night plugs the sweat ducts at the surface. It is the honest first step for both, it is cheap, and for many people it is enough. It irritates some skin.

Who each suits

miraDry

  • Best for — Heavy underarm sweating you want dealt with once.
  • The trade — You accept a sore week, and that it cannot be undone.

Botox for Sweating

  • Best for — Sweating in more than one place, or a first try before committing.
  • The trade — You keep coming back, and you keep paying.

Permanent versus adjustable

miraDry

MiraDry's strength is also its catch. The glands are gone. If the result is uneven, or you wanted less reduction than you got, there is no way back.

Botox for Sweating

Botox's weakness is also its safety net. If you dislike anything about the result, you wait a few months and it is gone. That makes it the lower-risk way to find out how life feels without underarm sweating.

Many dermatologists suggest trying Botox first for that reason. One round tells you whether the problem is worth a permanent fix.

Common questions

Questions Patients Ask

Is miraDry better than Botox for sweating?

It depends what you want. MiraDry is meant to be permanent and treats only the underarms. Botox lasts a few months, works anywhere, and can be stopped at any time.

Is miraDry really permanent?

Sweat glands do not grow back, so the reduction should last. Some people still need a second treatment to reach the level of dryness they wanted.

Which one costs less?

Botox costs less per visit but is repeated two or three times a year. Over several years the total can pass what miraDry costs once.

Does miraDry hurt?

The numbing injections are the sore part. The hour of treatment feels warm and tight, and the underarms are swollen and tender for several days afterwards.

Will I sweat more somewhere else?

Some people notice a little more sweating elsewhere with either treatment. It is usually mild, because underarm glands are only a small share of the total.

Should I try Botox before miraDry?

Many dermatologists suggest it. One round shows you what life without underarm sweating feels like, and it wears off if you do not like it.
